Bret spoke about the challenges of active shooter situations and the reactions people have when such a situation takes place. He spoke about the training system entitled A.L.I.C.E. for which the acronym represents; Alert, Lock Down, Inform, Counter and Evacuate…

Bret described a number of circumstances, some very recent and others somewhat dates, from which this response plan has originated. He described a profile of mass shooters, as to individuals who want to kill as many as possible in as short a time as possible, then to take their own lives… With this profile in mind, the effort by potential targets is to be trained take action that will confuse and thwart the shooter. Describing that most incidents involve immediate shooting within less than 10 minutes, it’s critical for potential victims to begin resisting and escaping because law enforcement is not likely to be on scene for the first 8 minutes. With training in the ALICE system, potential targets are informed, and have permission to act… Not just hunker down in a lock down mode.
Bret’s informative presentation could have lasted much longer… The training is critical in all corporate and institutional settings where a shooter may appear…
