Donna Aeling was with Glynna Hoekstra celebrating that she is cancer free!!!

Program:
Past President Brian Murphy introduced Dan McAllister, the San Diego County Tax Collector.
Mr. Mc Allister has been in this position since 2002 (6 terms) and is in charge of a 15.9 billion-dollar investment pool. He started out with a joke about Einstein (trying to lighten the mood). He encouraged our club and talked about the greatness that rotary does and how much we give back.
He also shared how the color of the tax bill was changed, they got ideas from The Rolling Stones and a bunch of 5th graders and the 5th graders won. A 5th grade girl suggested putting puppies on it and they discussed it and decided no but it was a great idea. A young man in the same class said they should change the ugly red color to a nicer blue which is kinder, loveable and better to look at and this is what they went with and that was 21 years ago.
The tax collector’s office informs homeowners who they are and why they do what they do by sending out a general informational pamphlet about property taxes. It helps people understand better how and why they need to pay the tax.
Mr. McAllister shared a couple of points:
- The tax office speaks 17 different languages
- They help people every day with the many questions that come in from all over the world
- Dividends that help college graduates with jobs
- 73% of all taxes are paid electronically
He talked about the investment pool and how all 42 school districts in the county deposit money by law in to that pool and how they service the banks for those school districts and also other special districts plus San Dag. They have 4 seminars a year to help educate the public with topics such as debt issuance, investment and financial management systems, cash handling and much more.
Mr. McAllister answered many questions and especially tried to answer the ones from Barry regarding propositions 13 and 19 and he did it with patience and a bit of humor.
