Program

Past President, Brian Murphy introduced the program for the day… Past District 5340 Governor and member of the Del Mar Solana Beach Rotary Club, Steve Weitzen… Steve, during his tenure as District Governor, was aware of the accomplishments of Escondido Sunrise Rotary, and congratulated us for our continued generosity to the Rotary Foundation…

During his District leadership time, Steve also became acutely aware of the Human Trafficking problem in the San Diego region…

Steve Weitzen speaking to Sunrise Rotarians…

The Extent of the Problem:

Steve spoke about the extent of the human trafficking that takes place, including organ trafficking, sex trafficking and labor trafficking… Kidneys in particular sell at a premium as part of the organ trade… And, 40 million men and women worldwide are locked into a slave labor trade…

Sex trafficked women, girls and boys have about a 7-year life expectancy as they are being abused, and only about 10 % are able to escape their circumstance…

The pandemic has been a problem as schools have not been in direct contact with students, and are less able to detect the behavioral changes that might come with a child that is being exploited…

Signs that schools look for are truancy, decline in academic performance, changes in behavior or students that have multiple cell phones…

The Economic Impact of Human Trafficking:

World-wide, sex trafficking is a $32 Billion trade circumstance. In the U.S., sex trafficking is about a $10 Billion annual enterprise. Exploiters, or pimps, want to keep the business going as a prostitute generates about $150,000 per year in revenue to her exploiter…

Much of the San Diego sex trafficking is homegrown and not multi-national…

Law Enforcement and Justice:

The District Attorney and local law enforcement are working constantly to uncover sex rings and gangs that deal with human trafficking. In the past, prostitutes were often arrested and charged while their pimps and exploiters were pursued less diligently by law enforcement…

What Can a Rotarian Do?

Rotary has an interest in assisting law enforcement and supporting recovery resources for persons that survive and flee the exploitation. There are shelters and safe houses in Escondido, Chula Vista and San Diego…

Rotary District 5340 has online training through the District Web Site…

As Steve Weizen shared, Rotary can be a source of “solutions in search of challenges”…

Support for our Escondido Community …

Our great community and the success of its businesses is all of our responsibilities… Support the businesses that are doing all they can to survive during this challenging time… Take out some chow… Be ready to support them when the economy begins working again…

The ‘Giving Arch’ on Grand Avenue and Centre City Parkway reminds us that Escondido is a caring, giving community…

To all; be safe and be well…. God Bless those men and women that carry the load at our medical facilities, and God Bless our first responders… May our governmental leaders be wise, thoughtful and smart as this pandemic is overtaken by our hard work and collective support…
