Program

Past President, Mike Dunlap introduced our program and our two speakers. Laura Mello is with Rady Children’s Hospital as the Director of Planned Giving… Jean Larsen is the Executive Director of the Legacy Endowment…

Laura began the teams’ presentation by speaking about gift planning and strategic charitable giving.

Laura Mello speaking to Sunrise Rotarians via Zoom…

As Laura described planned and strategic giving, she clarified the fact that planned giving is leaving part of one’s wealth to a charity, not just one’s income… All of this takes place as one desires to make a meaningful impact with their gift as part of their legacy…

Planned giving involves “value-based planning” and is more than just leaving a gift in one’s will…

Jean Larsen began sharing regarding the importance of reviewing and updating beneficiaries to one’s various investment accounts. Information was shared about what can take place if there is no beneficiary named, or if life circumstances have changed and old beneficiaries should be removed…

Jean Larsen speaking to Sunrise Rotarians via Zoom…

Information was shared as to the kinds of assets that are most ideal to share in a planned gift. Annuities, retirement accounts and the like are important… And, the aspects of tax avoidance by one’s heirs is a critical part of planning gifts.

All of this gets to the importance of having important conversations with family members as to one’s desires for disposition of their estate.

Another important consideration is the actual charity that one favors… Will the charity still be around at the time your gifts come to fruition? And of equal importance is whether the charity will be able to fulfill your desires for the uses of your gift…

And, will your gift be sustainable to meet your goals for the gift to the charity?? Essentially, will your intentions be fulfilled?

Jean shared a story about Benjamin Franklin and his endowment for educational and training awards. His endowment was set to last for 200 years, and during that time served many young people and their educational goals…

Laura concluded her remarks with a story about a young family whose prematurely born daughter required months of hospitalization with Rady’s Children’s Hospital; such care saved the little girl’s life. The young family, with limited means, was very thankful for the life-giving care received from Rady’s, that they wanted to gift the hospital… As is the case with many young families, they didn’t have the means to make a meaningful gift at the time they received their greatest benefit from the hospital… However, they have been able over time to leave a thankful legacy due to thoughtful planning. Laura revealed to us that the family in the story was her family and her daughter whose life was saved by the care received from Rady’s… A very impactful story of what planning can lead to for a charitable benefit… Even if it takes years for the strategy to be fulfilled…

Mike Dunlap added some perspective to the presentations by sharing insights into tax planning through charitable giving. Mike’s experience with the Rotary Foundation enabled many donors to enjoy significant tax savings while leaving important gifts for the Foundation’s work…

Past President Barry Baker shared that he has been able to use the assets of a rental property, whose value will ultimately be shared with his college, the Rotary Foundation and his heirs…

Thanks to Laura and Jean for their insights into planned giving…
