Escondido Sunrise Rotary; “Meeting to Serve our Community via Zoom; and the USS Midway Museum, Preserving our Navy Heritage…” May 28, 2020

Editor’s Note…

As we all try to conduct our professional pursuits in new ways, it’s appropriate to remind ourselves of who we are as a Serving Organization… Our accomplishments, our fellowship and the reminder of our many successes is valuable as we await the time we can gather together again…

So, we met via Zoom… On May 21… 24 Sunrise Rotary members talking about service and connecting through fellowship in new ways…

President Brian didn’t need a gavel, and, he called the meeting to order with a ‘Tinkle’… Still no bell… The President proudly shared that his beloved bell had been stolen 5 times… Not an achievement to be taken lightly; he does want it back before he leaves his post as our esteemed President…

President Brian commented that this was our ninth meeting via Zoom… Me thinks he likes leading a meeting in his PJs… Won’t it be fun to have an online demotion event??

Past President George Beitner led the pledge to our nation’s Flag

Past President Jack Anderson offered an invocation…

Announcements were made about the food support project for healthcare workers and first responders… The fundraising has ebbed; there is approximately $1,000 in the fund which will likely be used for Escondido PD staff and for Neighborhood Healthcare team members…

The ‘Orange Picking’ project has been cancelled due to concerns of the grove owners…

Past President Mike Dunlap reported on a couple of Sunrise Rotary projects and their ongoing benefit to the intended recipients…

The Cabins by the Lake project at Dixon Lake to provide a pontoon boat accessible for the handicapped was highlighted… The photo below depicts the designation of the boat as “Sunrise Naval Vessel #1” was recently used by a local family. The father, confined to a wheelchair, wrote a note thanking us for the opportunity to enjoy fishing with his children …

Mike also shared a photo of children in Guatemala that are recipients of our partnership with the Rotary Foundation to provided text books and computer learning centers…. Our efforts are coordinated with the “Co-Ed International Foundation” and include participation by over 100 other Rotary Clubs…

Thanks for the updates Past President Mike!!

Program:

Past President George Beitner introduced our on-line speaker, Steve Andres from the USS Midway museum. Steve is a retired Naval Officer and also a member of the La Jolla Sunrise Rotary Club.

Steve provided background information on Midway’s active service to our Nation and Navy; with her being defined as the longest serving active duty aircraft carrier. Midway was in action in three wars; Korea, Viet Nam and Desert Storm.

She was launched in 1945 right at the conclusion of World War II. Over the years she was part of our Cold War defense as well as active in combat in the wars mentioned above…

Midway was modified over time to include the addition of angled decks and she underwent three major modifications. The was assigned to nine West Pac deployments during Viet Nam, and was the first Navy Carrier home-ported outside of the continental US when she was assigned to Yokosuka Japan.

While actively deployed, she was literally ‘A City at Sea’, with a crew of 4,500 and additional personnel with Air Groups on board. The USS Midway museum was founded after she was retired. The museum is one of the top tourist attractions in all of California and of most of the other naval museums around the nation. The USS Midway Museum’s purpose is to preserve our Naval heritage and to inspire guests regarding the Naval Service and service in general to our Nation.

Rotarians Having Fun…

The Aelings and the O’Malleys enjoyed some time at Lake Arrowhead…

And Jack and Judi Anderson had a fun memorial day with lots of pool time for the grandsons…

Sorry, no photos available of those fun-loving Rotarians…

Keep your ‘fun’ photos coming to President Brian…

Support for our Escondido Community …

Our great community and the success of its businesses is all of our responsibilities… Support the businesses that are doing all they can to survive during this challenging time… Take out some chow… Be ready to support them when the economy begins working again…

The ‘Giving Arch’ on Grand Avenue and Centre City Parkway reminds us that Escondido is a caring, giving community…

To all; be safe and be well…. God Bless those men and women that carry the load at our medical facilities, and God Bless the first responders… May our governmental leaders be wise, thoughtful and smart as this pandemic is overtaken by our hard work and collective support…
