Programs:
On April 26 our program was presented by the Escondido Police Department Explorer Cadet Program. SGT Chris Leso presented information about the program for young people 16-21 years of age with interest in serving the community and learning about law enforcement. Accompanying SGT Leso was Detective Therese Ruiz and Cadet Alejandra Ledesma. Each member of the presentation team shared about the Police Cadet program and the support they provide for community events including such things as parades and, most importantly, our Grape Day 5K Event.

20 cadets are in the program now, and more are being recruited. A couple of big events are part of the training and competition that takes place for the Cadets. An annual competition honoring a former member of the Explorers involves navigating police scenarios, shooting and an obstacle course. More than fourteen Police Cadet groups from agencies in San Diego County participate in the competition.
Another major event is the annual Cadet Academy that takes place at UCSD. Lasting a week, the program involves police training and physical activity oriented toward successful law enforcement procedures. Escondido Sunrise has supported the academy in the past, as the cost is about $500 per participant for the week-long program. None of the support for the Cadet program comes from the Police Department operations budget.
Upon concluding the presentation, President Dave stated that ESR was going to contribute $500 toward the academy costs. Following that announcement, Past President Rich Aeling challenged ESR members to support the Academy with contributions of $100… Twenty-Two club members raised their hands to offer donations to the Cadet Academy, making a total gift of $2,700 to the program…

Program May 3:
Our program was focused on Veteran’s Village of San Diego and was presented by VVSD President and CEO, Kim Mitchell. Ms. Mitchell shared about the goals of the Village and the efforts they make to support veterans dealing with PTSD, substance abuse, unemployment and homelessness.
Kim shared a bit of her own background as a graduate of the US Naval Academy and service as a Naval Officer that led to her commitment to serving those who have served. Her unique story began as an infant in Viet Nam in 1972 when she was rescued, placed in an orphanage by a South Vietnamese soldier and ultimately adopted by an American Air Force Sergeant. Her amazing story had us in tears as she spoke of her love for America and the life she ‘gained’ through her adoptive family and country.

She spoke of the freedom that all veterans have fought to preserve, and shared this quote from former President, Ronald Reagan regarding freedom and the challenge of preserving it for future generations:
"Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same." - Ronald Reagan
Ms. Mitchell spoke about the number of clients VVSD serves from the Viet Nam war time period… She shared the recent commemoration of the 50th anniversary of that war, and the need to honor those who served in the military (not just in Viet Nam) during that extended conflict in Southeast Asia….
To that end, she presented commemorative pins to three ESR members that served in the military during the Viet Nam war period; Past Presidents, Tony Criss, Barry Baker and Jack Anderson…
