Escondido Sunrise Rotary; Meeting to Serve our Community
in Person and via Zoom; and “Carl Reed from Veterans Village”
June 15, 2023

As we all try to conduct our professional pursuits in new ways, it’s appropriate to remind ourselves of who we are as a Serving Organization… Our accomplishments, our fellowship and the reminder of our many successes is valuable as we seek new opportunities to serve…

We met again in person at the Chamber of Commerce… Great to enjoy the fellowship again and see all your smiling faces…

The meeting was led by Past President, Rich Aeling in President Tina’s absence…
Unfortunately there was not a President’s Bell in the meeting room… So only a bit of a “tinkle”…

Father’s Day gifts were prevalent in the meeting… Thanks to Kim Henson for putting that nice touch in place…

As a Club, we honored our nation with a salute to our Flag and an invocation was offered

Rotarians Having Fun and Serving…
All kinds of fun and service and fun…
Pictures are worth a thousand words…

Past President Rich enjoyed an outing at the San Diego County Fair with family and grandchildren…
Other than lamenting the $200 ticket purchase and the 24” Corndog that is still with him days later… He had a great time!!

Coronado Band Concerts in the Park… Past President Rich reminded us all of these opportunities coming up this summer… The last weekend in July is the time to enjoy beautiful Coronado and some great Rotary Fellowship…
Past President Rich (Seems like he’s the only Sunrise Rotarian having any fun these days)…

Also enjoyed an encounter with a swarm of bees in his “back forty”…
Seems Rich was planning to desert/leave Donna for a fishing trip, but he heard an unfamiliar “buzzing” sound from his garden shed…
Unbeknownst to him, a swarm of bees had picked his yard for their new domicile… In just 5 days, the ‘buzzers” had moved in and settled their queen and were gong about some serious honey-production…
Rich procured the services of a bee keeper/eradicator and he had the photos to prove it… Happy to have that problem solved/moved elsewhere!!

Gloria Lefler will be with us as Sergeant at Arms for the last time on June 22… She’s off to meet up with her beau and marriage, settling in Yuba City…
Gloria reminded us that she “brought hugs” to Escondido Sunrise…
We’ll miss you young lady…

Program:
Sunrise Rotarian (still a red-badger) Carl Reed presented the program regarding
Veteran’s Village of San Diego…
Carl is a social worker with Vet Village, and he described the mission and services of
the organization…

VVSD is a one stop shop for Veteran Services… Support for homeless vets; vets with addiction issues, vets with housing needs and serving as a bridge to other Veteran’s Administration services…
Vet Village of San Diego was founded with a focus on the medical care and
psychological care needs for vets in San Diego with an early focus on PTSD…

Over time, services have included direct contact with medical and employment support services as well as job training…
“Vet Villas” are part of the service with facilities in San Diego, Chula Vista and
Escondido (South Escondido Blvd.)…
Housing support includes a “Housing First” approach with a focus too on housing
stability…

VVSD initiated the Veteran’s Standdown for homeless veterans, providing an intense
level of support over a three-day period… Care services, service referrals, veteran court support and the like are part of the Standdown’s continuum of services… The North County Veteran’s Standdown is under a different service provider, but similar services…
The VVSD Standdown will be July 20-22 at the SD Sports Arena…
Information on VVSD can be found on their website; vvsd.net

The ‘Giving Arch’ on Grand Avenue and Centre City Parkway reminds us that Escondido is a caring, giving community…

To all; be safe and be well…. God Bless those men and women that carry the load at our medical facilities, and God Bless our first responders… May our governmental leaders be wise, thoughtful and smart as this pandemic is overtaken by our hard work and collective support…
