Sunrise Rotary February 22, 2018; “Padres Update with Randy Jones… And the Case of the Frozen Bell”

  

 

President Dave presided over our meeting; Past President Tony Criss led the Pledge to our Nation’s Flag and Past President Jack Anderson offered an invocation.

The Strange Case of the ‘Iced’ Bell…

Club members arrived at today’s meeting only to find a huge block of ice; or as President Trump would say… “A Yuuuggge block of ice… so big…” set in front of the lectern… allegedly our Club’s beloved 6” diameter Bronze Rotary Bell with Deluxe Top and it’s wooden striking mallet was imbedded in the block of ice…

 

Heaven forbid; President Dave allowed the Bronze Bell to be Copped and Frozen…

 

The Council of Past Presidents immediately took appropriate action and President Dave was fined $500.00 copper smackers…

President-Elect Dave Herbert commented regarding the upcoming District Assembly on March 24th; cost is $25.00 which will be reimbursed by the Club

 

The afternoon on the 24th is a Global Grant Session; anyone interested in working on or applying for a global grant from the Rotary Foundation should plan to attend the no-cost training session…

 

 

Past President Tony Criss mentioned that former member Elana Karoly was celebrating a ribbon cutting or her new ‘Go-2-Grow’ mentoring center…

 

Doug Shultz commented that ‘Dancing with our Stars’ will take place on April 7 at the Art Center… Doug threw down the gauntlet with Past President Kevin, stating that he would do as well as Kevin two years ago… Stand by Kevin!!

 

 

Program:

 

Past President Mark Hoekstra introduced our speaker, Randy Jones, former Padre Pitcher and Cy Young Award winner in 1976. Along with Randy was Matt Carr of the Padre Group sales office.

Matt shared some of the Padre organizations goals of engaging with the community and providing a great experience at Petco Park while winning some ball games.

 

To break the ice with Club Members, Matt organized a ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors’ contest… Best two of three, and the winner, playing against Randy Jones, was Mark Maus… and he won some Padre Tickets…

Randy talked about the young players coming up in the Padre organization… He’s excited to see these guys play and get better… The Padres have one of the better farm systems in the majors.

Randy talked some about his pitching career; The first two hits he gave up in the majors where homers to Willie Mays and Hank Aaron… His first win was against the Dodgers.

Randy was known to work quickly; he pitched one complete game and only threw 67 pitches… In another game he pitched and the game lasted only 1 hour and 29 minutes… He said he left the park before it was dark… In his Cy Young Award winning season, he lost four games by 1-0 scores… Great stories and a great season ahead.
