Program…

Past President, Jack Anderson Introduced Escondido City Manager Sean McGlynn… Sean has been on the job since June and shared with Sunrise Rotarians his background, and his process to begin working with City Issues and regional concerns…

Sean began his conversation with some background on his entry into local government management. Living in Manhattan on 9-11, Sean and his wife shared experiences with that tragic attack on our homeland that changed the course of his professional work….

Sean McGlynn having a conversation with Sunrise Rotarians…

Soon after the 9-11 attack, and with the election of Mayor Bloomberg, Sean sought opportunities to work with the City of New York to bring about recovery from the impacts of the attack… He learned much about coalition building and working within complex relationships with the City… But, all along was focused on process and not politics.

Sean went to work in community arts management for the Bloomberg administration… After several years in that capacity, he and his wife planned to start a family and decided that Manhattan was not the place for their future family.

Sean left New York City for a Department Head (and ultimately Deputy City Manager) position in El Paso… In that role, he learned much about coalition building across the border with Ciudad Juarez…

After several years in El Paso, he was hired as the City Manager in Santa Rosa, County seat of Sonoma County. His experience there related to downtown revitalization and close working relationships with the County… A major impact during Sean’s tenure in Santa Rosa was the Tubbs Ford during which over 5,000 structures within the City were damaged and/or destroyed.

The reconstruction effort was far-reaching, relating to physical rebuilding, but also supporting the community in its emotional recovery. Much was learned relative to coordinating governmental relationships to move the rebuilding process forward.

The community was able to rebuild 2,500 homes in less than four years; a process that moved forward through elimination of red tape and working with all aspects of the construction community…

Sean spent time speaking about issues in Escondido that he is rapidly learning about… He spoke about the homeless problem and the importance of coordinating with the County such that our City departments can effectively do their jobs with County support… Important in that process is for County agencies to work in a coordinated fashion…

Sean also spoke about the Downtown Escondido revitalization efforts, and the value of the Palomar Heights project to bringing people to Downtown businesses…
