High Fives:
Past President Jack Anderson spent a few days in ‘Constance-Land’… Idaho for you newcomers, Boise to be exact. Jack brought President Dave a sack of ‘Tater Toffee’… Enjoy…
Ralph Tavares was in a variety of European countries, including, Holland, Denmark and Germany… Along the way, he found some ‘local’ Vodka for our esteemed President… And, the bottle made it to the meeting unopened… Nice work Ralph!!
Our speaker and visiting Rotarian Larry Trautman informed us of a joint Club project to perform trash cleanup at the Highway 78/Centre City Parkway interchange. The cleanup happens once a quarter and the efforts in the past have resulted in over 165 bags of trash collected. Our Community Service representative, Past President Rich Aeling will keep us aware of these service opportunities in the future.
Past President and Foundation Chair, Kevin Svetich presented Paul Harris Fellowship Awards to a number of our members. Kevin reminded us that we finished the last Rotary years ranked #3 in District 540 in per capita giving to the Foundation… Great job; thanks to all for your generosity!!

Program:
Past President Rich Aeling introduced Larry Trautner. A retired nuclear engineer, Larry started his presentation with an engineer story…
“An optimist sees the glass as half full, a pessimist sees the glass as half empty… while an engineer concludes that the glass is too big…”
With that bit of humor, Larry began to expound on the aspects of atomic energy, and the risks of radiation to the world… Specifically related to nuclear power generating plants.

Larry briefly described for us the presence of nuclear energy in all aspects of our lives and our world; from the Sun, generating its heat through the action of 10,000 thermonuclear explosions occurring every second…to the core of the earth, which is molten material due to ongoing thermonuclear explosions taking place within that core… See the volcano action on the island of Hawaii…
Larry shared that each year we all experience 90 units of radiation exposure through the sun, the environment, medicine and nuclear power generation. He also share statistics related to causes of death, with cancer being most common, lightning being nearly least likely, with radiation from a nuclear accident being far less likely than being struck by lightning. He also spoke about energy generation with the US having 100 nuclear power generating plants, equating to the generation of approximately 20% of our nation’s energy demand… France, on the other hand, generates more than 75% of its energy needs through the nuclear power generation. Larry spoke about the controls in place relative to nuclear power generation, and the relative costly aspects of nuke power due to regulation… natural gas is much cheaper, thus the preferred method of generation because of the political ‘boogeyman’ that nuclear power has become. As he closed his presentation, he spoke about the closure of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, the methodology being used and the relative safety of the plans for closure.
President Dave thanked Larry for his presentation and presented him with a certificate of donation to Polio Plus in his name as a thank you for presenting to Escondido Sunrise…
