Program:

Col. Marianne Waldrop was introduced by Donna Boyce…Marianne served over 24 years of both active and reserve duty in the Marine Corps, serving as an Intelligence Officer… Some highlights of her career include: “Throughout her career, she led hundreds of Marines in a variety of environments; however, the most challenging were those leadership assignments while deployed in support of four combat operations in Saudi Arabia, Africa, and Iraq.  Marianne’s military career spanned over 24 years, serving from 1987-2011, when she retired in San Diego, California. Upon her retirement in 2011, Marianne attended the University of San Diego and earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Leadership Studies in May, 2016.

Col. Marianne Waldrop presenting to Sunrise Rotary members…

Marianne is from a Marine Family, her father and others served long and proudly… Graduating from college in an ROTC program, naturally she chose the Marine Corps option… What intrigued her over the years were the challenges faced by Women Marine Corps Officers… After retiring in 2011, she chose to pursue a doctoral degree in leadership. She chose a theme for dissertation relating to women succeeding in leadership roles in the Marine Corps, a male - dominated career path…

Col. Waldrop shown with a photo of her father, a retired Marine Corps Colonel…

The history of women in the Marine Corps, and promotion to General Officer rank was part of the history of women in the military, and affected her study. The first Marine Corps Woman General was appointed in 1978; the first ‘competitive class’ competing for promotion to General was in 1985… Marianne joked about the perception that the Marines are ‘knuckle draggers’… Thus the relative slowness in promoting women to General compared to other branches of the military…

She selected the ten women who have served as general officers in the Corps, to conduct extensive interviews to evaluate three key areas of career pathways in the military; the structure of the organization (rules and regulations) affecting promotion; the culture of the organization (espoused beliefs and underlying assumptions) that will affect a career; and aspects of the agency itself (actions, decisions, personal traits and temperament) that affected career longevity and promotion potential…

These slides show some statistics relative to the historical view of women General Officers in the Marine Corps…
