Program: “The Battle of San Pasqual” presented by San Pasqual Battlefield Association President, Tom Vilicich…

Tom was introduced by President Dave who also is a participant in the Association and their reenactment events.

Tom described for Club members the background on the bigger battle area and specifically spoke about the challenges of the Battle of San Pasqual. The Dragoons fighting the Californios for control of the San Diego area…

Tom Vilicich describing the battle and some of the weapons used by the American troops….

Some of the details of the logistical aspects of the battle were interestingly shared; 20 thousand head of livestock were part of the 1st US Dragoons, among them were 12 thousand head of cattle… So the provisioning challenges were both to feed the men as well as th animals

As the Army moved into the San Pasqual Valley, they encountered challenges and needed outside help. Kit Carson was a Scout working for General Kearney and he was the contact/go-between with the troops up north and the General in San Diego… He, LT Beale and another man, needed to get to San Diego as they had wounded and needed support; they hiked to San Diego (about 17 miles) after dark and barefoot so as not to be discovered by the Californio sentries… As we know, help eventually came…

The Battlefield Association stages reenactment events; the first Sunday of each month, October-June, and conducts school programs.
