Program:

Past President Bob Burson introduced our speaker, John Burson, a counselor at San Pasqual High School… Bob struggled a bit with the details on John’s bio… Bob!!… But shared with us about John’s background and his current role at SPHS. In addition to his counseling role, he is the boys soccer coach…

John shared with us about the responsibilities for guidance counselors, including support for their assigned students’ academic, career, and social progress through high school.

John Burson speaking to Sunrise Rotarians…

John and his counterparts each are responsible for over 300 students in all four high school grades. Their support includes class selection guidance, and intervention as students begin to fall behind normal progress over their four year high school career. At times, student issues require support from outside agencies, including family counseling and similar support services.

John shared about some of the societal challenges that high school students face including vaping and some that face homeless challenges in their families… vaping is particularly challenging as the harm students can do to their bodies is critical at their young ages, and the social media pressure to use such devices is overwhelming for many students…

Another major issue that is a challenge for students and school administrators is the impact of social media on students. Increased anxiety, cyber-bullying and FOMO (fear of missing out) all add stress to the otherwise stressful lives of high school students…
