As we all try to conduct our professional pursuits in new ways, it’s appropriate to remind ourselves of who we are as a Serving Organization… Our accomplishments, our fellowship and the reminder of our many successes is valuable as we await the time we can gather together again…
So, we met via Zoom… On February 25 … Sunrise Rotary members talking about service and connecting through fellowship in new ways…
President Chris opened the meeting… Even with a gavel and the familiar chime of a gavel striking a bell… 25 Sunrise Rotarians joined the Zoom meeting… Nice job all of you for joining us…

Escondido Rotary Project to Provided Elementary School Students with Study Desks…
These folding desks are a project of Escondido Rotary (The “Tuesday Club”…) for elementary students that don’t have at-home study areas for their virtual classroom program. Assembly for 50 desks took place on Saturday February 27 at Aelott…
Covid Vaccine and Testing through Neighborhood Health for High School Athletes
Tina Pope shared information about a shift in the vaccine program to support higher levels of testing as the high school athletic programs resume. Student athletes will be tested multiple times each week, consistent with testing protocols for college sports… Neighborhood Health will be supporting this program at individual campuses… Volunteers will be needed; more information to follow.

President Chris shared information from Tricia Masson regarding an upcoming memorial remembrance for our Past President, John. Chris will have information for you as needed; this event is not to be shared on social media… Please respect the family’s request for privacy.
Program:
Past President, Rich Aeling introduced the speaker, our very own member, SGT Chris Leso of the Escondido Police Department. Chris serves as the Traffic Sergeant, and was speaking to his fellow Sunrise Rotarians about the Department’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems program.

Chris began his presentation with a video showing the varied ways in which the Unmanned Aircraft… “Drones” support law enforcement and first responders in Escondido.
A variety of drones are used, from small hand-held devices for indoor use in clearing buildings, to large 4 feet square craft that include night-lighting capability, infrared capability and public address functions to speak to suspects on the ground.
This slide shows the varied devices that are included in the drone unit…
Flying the unmanned aircraft falls under aviation control of the FAA. This slide shows the criteria under which the drones are used….
Currently, 10 Escondido PD Officers are licensed to operate the drones in Escondido’s fleet.
This slide speaks to the varied capabilities of the drone fleet...
This slide shows the deployment of a hand-held drone that is used by SWAT officers in clearing a building prior to entering… Use of a device like this enables the responding officers to know what hazards they may face as a they enter a building…
Chris concluded his presentation with information and photo depictions of the recent officer-involved shooting near the apartment complex at Lincoln and Morning View… The slides of the location were shot by a drone, depicting the drone's capability to 'map' locations.
