Program:
For Jehen, it all began when working as travelling editor, she was laid off during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Taking some time way, she found herself in Nepal serving and helping for a few weeks. During that two week, Jehen fell in love with the people. With the support of her
husband (of only 4 months), Jehen to committed to staying in Nepal for a full year.
Since then, Jehen Seirafi, cofounder and director of Sunsar Maya has been helping those in need in Nepal, specifically, women and children.
Sunsar Maya’s mission is to help vulnerable women and children in Nepal build pathways out of poverty, through holistic, community-based programs that promote education, mental health,
and physical well-being. The need in Nepal is great. Its geography, political unrest, and high patriarchal society leave women and children under resourced and exposed to the nightmares of trafficking
Sunsar Maya’s Mission has 3 areas of service:
1. SuMa After school is a program that provide impoverished children with a nutritious
meal, medical care, mental health support, and STEM focused educational enrichment.
This program fosters creative and critical thinking, empowering the students with a
foundation of future learning.
2. SuMa Literacy is a program provides women with the tools they need live better lives.
From learning numbers and life skills to better health and living better lives that breaks
the cycle of poverty
3. SuMa Teacher training bring education to remote areas of Nepal and emergency aid.
Highlights
- After school program serves 270 students
o 12,290 meals served
o 442 Medical check ups
o 193 Dental check ups
o 244 kits of warm clothing, hats, gloves, and shoes.
- Women’s Literacy programs serves 100 women
o 57,630 hours of experiential learning
o 218 Medical check ups
o 109 Dental check ups

Real life stories
- Manisha - A 12-year-old girl who was one of Sunsar Maya’s first students who received services and a safe place to learn and grow. Manisha has sense graduated high school and is attending college. Additionally, Manisha has returned to Sunsar Maya as a
teacher. Upon completing her college education, Manisha plans to return to her native community and serve as a teacher.

These student stories demonstrate the good work Sunsar Maya is doing to make an uncommon story common.
