Guest Speaker
Mary Anne Dijak Education COMPACT
Director of Prevention and Intervention Services

Mary has been involved in Education COMPACT for 35 years.  COMPACT was established in 1989 when key leaders from the EUSD, EUHSD, Escondido chamber of Commerce, and the City of Escondido gathered to form an equitable organization committed to developing and implementing community wide programs to support youth.  COMPACT assists them in becoming contributing citizens in our community by helping youth prepare for school, work, life and be successful in the career path they choose.  COMPACT’s mission is to provide a unique and innovative organization to create and implement high quality programs and services for individuals to reach their fullest potential.  The program serves whole families, those at risk for system impact youth between the ages of 6 and 18 years old, youth leaders and young adults 17 to 28 years old.  Some of the more impactful COMPACT programs are the Intervention Program, Detention Case Management Program, and Prevention Program for at risk youth that are likely to join gangs or use drugs.

Mary stated that as the program continues to grow but the resources to update what is needed in improving buildings and providing the program have become limited.  They receive grant money from the state, county, city grants, and from a large donor base that cover 75% of the greater cost.  For this reason, Palomar Junior College will be collecting signatures to place a 20-year school bond measure on the November ballot.  The previous 20-year school bond measure ends in two years and there is still more work needed to be done. Mary asked that we speak to our friends, neighbors, and community leaders to support the measure as the program directly impacts our community through the successes of the youth that now are contributing to our city.
