170 homeless veterans were registered at the beginning of the event… Lots of support with hygiene, clothing, court support, social services guidance and more

 

Past President George Beitner reminded Club Members that the Fisher House drive is on for consumable supplies for this important family support program at Camp Pendleton. Donated items will be transported to the facility on February 22nd; bring your items to Club meetings or to AllStar Signs…

 

Past President Mike Dunlap announced that he and Nancy will be traveling to Guatemala on a Global Grant project of the Rotary Foundation to distribute text books to schools… Travel safely!

Past President Rich Aeling announced the Tijuana House Building project coming up the weekend of February 10. The project is connected to Project Mercy, and we are joining with the After 5 Rotary Club. In addition to building the house for the family, we will provide some start-up household items to support the family. Rich passed the hat; funds will be used for items like a microwave, some dishes and bedding, etc.

Past President Barry Baker was recently in Gardnerville, NV and encountered John Breylinger, a former member of Escondido Sunrise…

 

In the News; Our wood-working club member Brian Murphy was recently featured in a news article in the “Coast News”… actually, if you look closely it was 2016… Brian, you should have been fined for the article, and now again for putting it on your FaceBook page two years later…

 

 

 

 

 

Gloria Leffler shared that her mother recently celebrated her 92nd birthday and is recovering from pneumonia… Happy Birthday Mom!

 

Ralph Tavares was recently in Brazil and brought some coffee for President Dave; he and Silvana will be going to Germany (on business…) Wonder he will bring you from that trip Dave??

 

President Dave announced that Rorie Johnston and Tina Pope will be co-chairing our Interact Program at San Pasqual High School. Thanks for stepping up to leadership Rorie and Tina!!

 

Programs:

 

On January 25, we had two extemporaneous “Who Was I?” presentations by Past Presidents John Boyce and Jack Anderson… Past President Mark Hoekstra knew that the club members wanted to hear of the past exploits of these two long-time members. John shared a bit of his professional history as he started in sales with formulabs (ball point pen ink manufacturers) in Escondido… Ultimately moving west from his thirteen eastern-state territory. He and partner Tom Reid purchased Kuske interiors in 1980, and John became sole owner in 1984. He is a happy grampa…

 

Past President Jack shared some of his youthful history growing up in the San Fernando Valley… His Navy days after college, and his professional career beginning in Parks and Recreation for two other cities before coming to Escondido in 1980…

On February 1st, Past President Mark Hoekstra introduced our program, “Bird’s Eye Aerial Drones.” Scott and Shari Painter shared some of the interesting details of flying drone aircraft for business and pleasure. Significant FAA regulations continue to be developed as drones are becoming more and more prevalent in population areas. Actually, Past President Mark had a ‘mea culpa’ moment as he shared how he used a drone over thousands of spectators and participants at our Grape Day 5K… Apparently illegally… Oh Mark, what shall we do with you??

 

Mark Painter shared about FAA classes and certifications that drone operators can undergo for certification. Safety is a key factor, especially in urban areas.
