Editor’s Note…

As we all try to conduct our professional pursuits in new ways, it’s appropriate to remind ourselves of who we are as a Serving Organization… Our accomplishments, our fellowship and the reminder of our many successes is valuable as we await the time we can gather together again…

 

So, we met via Zoom… On September 24…  Sunrise Rotary members talking about service and connecting through fellowship in new ways…

 

President Chris opened the meeting… Even with a gavel and the familiar chime of a gavel striking a bell…  23 Sunrise Rotarians joined the Zoom meeting… Nice job all of you for joining us…

Past President Dave Casey led the pledge to our nation’s Flag…

Youth Protection Certification

President Chris reminded all that Youth Protection Certification is required if you work with youth in any of our programs.

Past President Mike O’Malley oversees the certification and recently sent emails with the forms, procedure and all the details…

Project Mercy Tijuana House Build Project

Past President Rich Aeling reported on this next year’s Tijuana House Build Project; he reported that due to the Covid pandemic, our project will entail constructing the frame elements of the house in San Ysidro from which they will be transported across the border to the project site. Likely to take place on a Friday in March, 2021… Watch for more details.

 

Escondido East Rotary Thanksgiving Dinner Delivery

President Chris announced that East Rotary is seeking drivers to deliver meals on Thanksgiving Day… Contact is with Darrol Castor of the East Club, contact President Chris to volunteer and connect with Darrol.

Escondido Education Foundation; Need for Jump Ropes

Past President Barry Baker is on the Board of the Escondido Education Foundation, and they are seeking donations to provide jump ropes to schools so that students (involved in distance learning) can have some PE support while at home…

President Chris announced that plans are underway for one meeting a month to be held in person at Cocina Del Charro… This effort is underway as Cocina is not serving group meals at breakfast… Watch for details of a Sunrise/Sunset Rotary gathering for ‘Happy Hour’ …

President Chris announced the ‘Women in Rotary’ Award for September to Liz Phillips… Recently engaged (Congratulations Again!) Liz is working on our Grape Day 5K social media effort…

 

Rotarian of the Month is Membership Chair, Joe Holtz… Joe is not resting on his laurels… Although newest member, Chris Leso was inducted by District Governor Steve Weitzen, Joe is hard at work enhancing our ‘onboarding’ effort for new members…

Grape Day 5K Update:

 

President Elect Richard Agnew reported on the status of the event.

 

Our fundraising progress to date is $20,991 with a tight race between Teams Dragon and Kraken…

 

58 participants have registered to date… Past President Jim Ponder encouraged us all to keep the dollar roundup going… small or large, all gifts are helpful. Jim also encouraged each Sunrise Rotarian to register for the event…

This is an ‘ALL HANDS’ effort… Your Club and your community need your active support…

Past President Dave Casey… Nice to see you on line Dave!!introduced our speaker, Matt Foster of the North County Veteran’s Stand Down…

 

 

 

Matt is retired from the Marine Corps and active in the VFW. Matt was honored as Veteran of the Year in San Diego County in 2018, and has led the effort to support North County veterans for the past 5 years…

Matt spoke about the program that supports veterans and their families from the North County area. Specifically, the stand down is a time for homeless veterans and those veterans in crisis to receive support as they are guided to re-direct their lives.

Past President Dave added a comment regarding the importance of the February 2021 Stand Down due to the impacts of the COVID pandemic on our homeless veterans…

Matt shared information about all of the services available to the veteran participants… and shared some statistics as to the depth of services offered in 2020…

 

Critical support is available in the form of clothing, especially socks and underwear (new of course)… This photo shows the array of shoes available to the veteran participants…

 

 

Homeless Court is another valuable resource for the veterans, allowing them to clear lingering citations and the like. Pictured is a North County Judge conducting a session to clear court orders…

 

Last year, a classic car show was part of the event; bringing more community support, plus some enjoyable diversion for the veterans and their families…

 

Matt thanked all of the Escondido Rotary Clubs for our support with the outstanding clothing drive for the event….

 

 

Next year’s event will be held February 11-14, 2021… Donations can be made online to ncstanddown.org…
