Program

Tina Inscoe introduced Trudy Armstrong, Director of Regional Outreach for the San Diego Community Foundation… Trudy is well known in Escondido as the staff representative to the Escondido Community Foundation… And, she has a full resume of Rotary achievements, including serving as Assistant Governor for Past District Governor, Mike Stelman…

Trudy offered background on the parent foundation, The San Diego Community Foundation and its regional affiliate in Escondido, The Escondido Community Foundation…

Trudy Armstrong speaking to Sunrise Rotarians via Zoom…

Trudy began her presentation by showing a video highlighting much of what the San Diego Foundation and its affiliate organizations, such as the Escondido Community Foundation accomplish in providing support to community organizations…

One of the recent landmark projects is the iconic “Giving Arch” on Grand Avenue in Escondido. A major donor and many smaller donors helped to make the arch become a reality, while also raising awareness for many of the philanthropic needs of the community.

Trudy spoke about the “Power of Pooled Philanthropy” and emphasizing the strength gained through our community’s affiliate with the San Diego Community Foundation; which was founded by Mayor Pete Wilson in 1975…Trudy quoted President John Kennedy in stating that “A rising tide lifts all boats” to that end, the San Diego Foundation and its Affiliate Foundations are in the “Boat Building Business” as they support a wide variety of not for profit organizations in the region…

The San Diego Foundation and affiliates have the largest scholarship program in the region, outside of the state universities…

Affiliates are located in various regions of the County, from Oceanside and Escondido, down to Chula Vista and communities in between… Among the affiliate organizations, their endowment exceeds $ 2.6 M and over 1,000 members are regular donors to the foundation(s)…

The Escondido Community Foundation was founded in 2006 and since that time, over $6M has been raised, and one $3M granted for programs determined by the Community Foundation members…

One of the important local programs is the “Secret Santa” program conducted with the Escondido Police Department. Police Officers are given $100 dollar bills to ‘gift’ to individuals and families they encounter that are experiencing difficult circumstances… This program builds relationships with the community and the Police Department…

SGT Chris Leso commented on the value of this program to support our officers as they serve in challenging settings, especially during the Christmas holidays…

Trudy spoke extensively about the “Giving Arch” project as it not only enhances the image of Downtown Escondido, but also still enables donors to be recognized on the base columns while their donations continue to do great things in the community…

Each year, the members of the Escondido Foundation participate in deciding the focus points of the next year’s charitable goals…

An organization that has benefitted from the Community Foundation's generosity is Neighborhood Health. Sunrise Rotary President Elect, Tina Pope, commented on the value the Foundation has been to Neighborhood Health...

The incoming Chair of the grants committee in our own Donna Aeling…The focus of grants for 2022 is workforce development…

Thanks to Trudy for an informative presentation on the importance of philanthropy in our community…

Support for our Escondido Community …

Our great community and the success of its businesses is all of our responsibilities… Support the businesses that are doing all they can to survive during this challenging time… Take out some chow… Be ready to support them when the economy begins working again…

The ‘Giving Arch’ on Grand Avenue and Centre City Parkway reminds us that Escondido is a caring, giving community…

To all; be safe and be well…. God Bless those men and women that carry the load at our medical facilities, and God Bless our first responders… May our governmental leaders be wise, thoughtful and smart as this pandemic is overtaken by our hard work and collective support…
