Supervisor Jim Desmond speaking to Sunrise Rotarians…

.

Supervisor Desmond is a former neighbor of Past President Mike O’Malley, thus favors us with his insights and perspectives on County issues…

He spoke about the COVID pandemic and measures underway in the County. Specifically, he spoke about the current impact on our health care system and that the intensity of such impact is stable and declining. He expressed concern that our Board of Supervisors may be leaning toward the stricter controls seen in Los Angeles County… He stated that he would oppose stricter controls when our case load is declining…

Supervisor Desmond spoke about the homeless problem in the County, and supports efforts to provide housing, but more importantly to provide the needed behavioral health support to break the cycle of homelessness… He spoke about ‘Crisis Stabilization Units’ connecting mental health support with law enforcement. And, in the same regard, working with the District Attorney, to provide “One Safe Place” with the District Attorney’s office, and coordination with local law enforcement to provide support for domestic violence situations…

Supervisor Desmond, responded to a question from the members and explained recent actions by the Board, on his motion, to support the control of where sexually violent predators are paroled in our communities…. Recently, much news coverage has related to residents having to fight the battle with the State of California as to the placement of such individuals in residential neighborhoods… The Supervisor believes the County should be a decision-maker in the process to place these paroled individuals…

Supervisor Desmond concluded his prepared remarks speaking about the challenges with SANDAG (our local transportation planning agency) wanting to re-direct funds from highway HOV lanes to bike lanes within communities… And, to work towards a tax on miles driven in our cars; all in an effort to get people out of their cars and into public transit… He is passionate about this issue, as County taxpayers have agreed to tax themselves until 2048 to pay for promised highway improvements… And, now, it’s apparent that SANDAG wants to switch project priorities…
