Escondido Sunrise Rotary; “The City of Escondido Assesses Housing Needs in the Community”… February 13, 2020

President Brian led the meeting…

We honored our flag and our nation with the pledge led by Past President Jack Anderson…

An invocation was offered by President Elect Chris Miller…

The Bell is Still Missing !!

President Brian has this propensity to not secure his precious President’s Bell.

It’s missing again… Kind of like a greased pig contest at the County Fair…”It keeps slipping out of his hands”…

Notice the photo on the bell… “Protect me Brian”… Can President Brian protect his bell from the Bobcat???

26:    Sunrise Rotary’s 40th Anniversary… No specific                         plans yet, but President Brian is trolling for                             members to help     plan a celebration… Perhaps a                         dinner meeting??

Contact the Prez with your ideas…

High Fives:

Past President Alan Miller and Joe Holtz announced that they volunteered at the North County Veteran’s Stand Down last weekend… Great job guys!!

Past President George Beitner announced that newspapers are needed for the RYLA weekend. One of the activities that always takes place is ‘wrapping the facilitator’… Essentially a ‘mumification’ process… So, old newsprint is needed. Save ‘em and get ‘em to George or Jim Ponder…

Past President John Boyce shared some ‘stars’ from old US flags. John received them from a friend in a Rotary Club in Tacoma WA… Nice touch for all of us to remember those stars in our banner of freedom… Thanks John!

Program:

Past President Barry Baker introduced Karen Youel, of the City of Escondido Housing Office. Karen’s team is in the midst of preparing Escondido’s five-year housing plan… She sought our input via a survey document, and shared with us about Escondido’s success in the past and goals looking forward….

Karen Youel speaking to Sunrise Rotarians…

Karen spoke about current housing priorities and the success the City has gained in pursuing those goals…

Part of the community’s housing efforts also focus on the kinds of resources that the City will receive from outside sources… Included in that resource are Federal Community Development Block Grants. Karen spoke about such grants and the way they can be used to enhance community resources and improving the quality of life in the city…

Karen also spoke about efforts the city is undertaking to coordinate services to meet the needs of homeless individuals… Coordination among City services such as Police and Public Works are critical to work with homeless solutions including the physical cleanup, and referrals to services that will benefit the homeless population, including substance abuse and mental health issues…

Coordination also includes working with the County and its resources as well as with social work professionals…

Many ESR members complete the survey for the City and will be receiving updates as the 5-Year Plan comes together and is available for public review and comment…
