Program:
Past President Mark Hoekstra introduced our speaker, Past District Governor, Marty Peters. Marty wanted to update us on the Rotary efforts to eradicate polio in the world. He shared some key facts about the number of cases reported, and the goal of having no new cases for three years… That will mean it has been conquered.
He commented on the efforts of Rotary in India, where there were 126,000 distribution points of the vaccine on a single weekend… An amazing accomplishment of great organization. Marty also commented that one of the challenges Rotary faces in totalitarian countries where women are not allowed equal rights, that mothers trying to protect their children from polio is considered criminal…
Marty went on to share that Rotary still has a branding problem in so many countries; the World Health Organization attempts to take credit for the work to overcome polio, and Rotary barely gets a mention in the publicity information.
