As we all try to conduct our professional pursuits in new ways, it’s appropriate to remind ourselves of who we are as a Serving Organization… Our accomplishments, our fellowship and the reminder of our many successes is valuable as we await the time we can gather together again…
So, we met via Zoom… On February 11 … Sunrise Rotary members talking about service and connecting through fellowship in new ways…
President Chris opened the meeting… Even with a gavel and the familiar chime of a gavel striking a bell… 20 Sunrise Rotarians joined the Zoom meeting… Nice job all of you for joining us…

Delivery will be on Thursday, March 18… Items can be dropped off at All Star Signs (1924 Mission Road, Escondido) or Aelott Air Conditioning (812 W. Washington, Escondido)… “Better than the white glove boys”…

President Chris announced an upcoming program with the Escondido Education Foundation
Past President Mike Dunlap shared the need for engineering services at Camp Pendleton for the Camp Pendleton Community Foundation to build a building to house their furniture distribution program. Hopefully a retired civil engineer… with very low fees… Contact Mike for information.
Past President Jack Anderson expressed his thankfulness for passing his ‘behind the wheel’ driving test with the DMV… With his vision challenges, and this requirement, he had to imagine himself as a 16 year-old again…
Program:
Past President Mike Dunlap introduced Joe Berninger of the Guatemala Literacy Project. Mike and Nancy have participated with the project, including travel to Guatemala, and sponsor a child’s annual schooling expenses through the program. Escondido Sunrise is one of 600 plus Rotary Clubs world-wide that a part of the Global Grant for this project.

The Guatemala Literacy project has been ongoing for 25 years, and over that time has garnered over 600 Rotary Clubs world-wide as Global Grant Partners. This project is considered “The Gold Standard” of Rotary Foundation projects as stated by Ian Reisly, Past President of Rotary International…

A significant challenge in Guatemala is the level of literacy and the high level of poverty resulting from such illiteracy. Key elements of the program include teacher training and working with families so that the learning can continue at home…
Teacher Training is a key....
Support for families so that reading at home becomes integral to the student...
Along with the reading skills are computer skills that enable the young people to find work.
Finally, a key part of the program is its sustainability; students are asked to pay a minimal amount for their books; such funds are then ‘re-cycled’ into the program to continue purchasing additional books…
Opportunities exist to support the overall program, through our Rotary Foundation contribution, but also to sponsor a child… Costing $960 per year, sponsorship includes books, fees, uniforms and related costs of an annual educational experience…
