The National MS Society and its local chapter have been a major beneficiary of our Grape Day 5K fundraising efforts… Janet’s presentation today was to update us on the progress the Association is making in its efforts to find a cure through research, while at the same time providing support services and care to those afflicted with Multiple Sclerosis…

Janet Hamada-Kelley speaking to Sunrise Rotarians…

Over the 75 years of its existence, the MS Society has become the largest Multiple Sclerosis support and research organization in the nation, and a world leader in the battle to overcome its impact on those afflicted…

Today’s presentation included a video and some stories of those afflicted by the disease… MS attacks the nervous system and the myelin sheath that covers and protects nerves within the body. Those that are afflicted all have different experiences as to the onset of the disease and the manner in which they fight through the symptoms and life-changing challenges the disease presents.

Past President, Jim Ponder shared stories of MS patients and their personal battles with the disease and their fighting spirits to overcome the impacts on their lives…

Jim Ponder sharing stories about MS patients…

Janet Hamada-Kelley spoke about the various aspects of the disease and the mission of the Society as it works towards a cure…

The Society, in existence for 75 years, has made more progress towards a cure in the last 5 years than were made in the first 70 years of its existence…

A major breakthrough was for the Society’s mission statement to include the goal of seeking a cure for the disease… Their focus includes efforts to stop the progression of the disease, resort the myelin sheath of those nerves affected by the disease and the work on prevention efforts through research and understanding of genetic biomarkers…
