Escondido Sunrise Rotary; Meeting to Serve our Community via Zoom; and “RYLA, the Why’s and the Wherefor’s… Serving our Youth Leaders…” June 11, 2020

Editor’s Note…

As we all try to conduct our professional pursuits in new ways, it’s appropriate to remind ourselves of who we are as a Serving Organization… Our accomplishments, our fellowship and the reminder of our many successes is valuable as we await the time we can gather together again…

So, we met via Zoom… On June 11… 15 Sunrise Rotary members talking about service and connecting through fellowship in new ways…

President Brian didn’t need a gavel or a bell… He brought the meeting to order with a his now, too familiar… ‘Tinkle’…

Past President Mike Dunlap led the pledge to our nation’s Flag

Past President Jack Anderson offered an invocation…

President Brian proudly shared that his beloved bell had been stolen 5 times… Not an achievement to be taken lightly; he does want it back before he leaves his post as our esteemed President…

A photo also appeared of the bell, near death, under the wheel of a large vehicle… Jokingly referred to as the ‘Road Crush’ photo…

The President also commented that this was our eleventh meeting via Zoom…

Program:

Our program this week was presented by Past President, Kelly Mayberry, the current Chair of RYLA for District 5340. Past President Kelly was ably introduced by Past President Jim Ponder… Jim’s a fellow Sunrise Rotarian that knows Kelly and her Mom Carol, better than any Sunrise Rotary member… Great Job Jim!! Introducing Kelly…

RYLA is the acronym for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards; Kelly was a Rylarian, and has served on the RYLA Committee for many years.

Kelly Mayberry speaking to Sunrise Rotarians…

Past President Kelly introduced her presentation with a video that is pattered after the movie ‘Top Gun’ and its theme of excitement and excellence. Sunrise Rotary has been directly involved with RYLA since 1994; and several members of Sunrise Rotary have served in leadership roles including Past Presidents Jim Ponder and George Beitner and a number of Sunrise members have served as facilitators for the weekend leadership program…

The following photos depict the RYLA purpose and the challenge to the high school juniors who join the program at Idyllwild Pines… “To get out of their comfort zones…”

Kelly shared some details about how the RYLA attendees, all student leaders in their own schools and communities are chosen for the award. She also shared about the quality of the program and the outstanding leadership speakers that join our program; many of whom command large honoraria as speakers, but come to RYLA pro bono…

The 2020 RYLA program was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Kelly wanted us to know about the way each year’s program is developed, relying heavily on high school seniors “RYLA Alumni” who participated in RYLA the prior year…

Pictured are the Alumni Leaders at the last RYLA Camp…

This photo depicts the Rotarians that lead the RYLA program and the Rotarian Facilitators that serve during the weekend camp…

Kelly closed her remarks with this slide; defining the purpose of RYLA, and the motivation that drives the leaders and is shared with the student participants; this quote from Forest Witcraft regarding the great value there is in inspiring young people…

Rotarians Having Fun…

No one had fun this week…

Keep your ‘fun’ photos coming to President Brian…

The ‘Giving Arch’ on Grand Avenue and Centre City Parkway reminds us that Escondido is a caring, giving community…

To all; be safe and be well…. God Bless those men and women that carry the load at our medical facilities, and God Bless the first responders… May our governmental leaders be wise, thoughtful and smart as this pandemic is overtaken by our hard work and collective support…
