As we all try to conduct our professional pursuits in new ways, it’s appropriate to remind ourselves of who we are as a Serving Organization… Our accomplishments, our fellowship and the reminder of our many successes is valuable as we seek new opportunities to serve…
This meeting was held via Zoom due to the contagious Omicron variant of Covid… And, opened with a “virtual bell”…

Past President Mike Dunlap provided some background information on the project with the County of San Diego… This is the 14th cabin, with handicapped access, built by the Cabins by the Lake charity… This project will cost about $75,000

Support for Fisher House at Camp Pendleton

Past President, John Boyce introduced our speaker, Dr. Derry Connelly, President of John Paul the Great University. Derry brings a wealth of academic achievement to his role, and has embraced Escondido and North County as the University has grown…
John Paul the Great University was founded in San Diego in 2006, and moved to downtown Escondido in 2013… The curriculum specializes in the creative arts and business while also focusing on entrepreneurial leadership. Academic programs also include emphases on communications media and entertainment media, all based on the Christian ethics of the University’s namesake, Pope John Paul the Great…

Since relocating to Escondido from a San Diego industrial area where zoning restrictions kept them from growing, JP the Great has doubled its enrollment.
The University initially located in the former JC Penney/Mingei Museum building at Maple and Grand. Subsequently, they acquired the old Home Savings building also at Grand and Maple and now also own the former HJ Johnson Furniture building at Broadway and Second, as well as the former High School District office at Third and Maple…
The University and the Downtown area have become interdependent, thus the move to acquire additional properties. The students are often involved in internships with local businesses, and the Downtown/Grand Avenue lifestyle is mutually compatible with student life.
Student housing has been accomplished through long term leases at Latitude 33 (Centre City PKWY and Washington) for 50 apartment units… University students originated from throughout San Diego County, Southern California and five continents…
Accreditation through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges has been consistent throughout the University’s existence, and the success of the students is represented by a 70% graduation rate… Higher than the average 50% graduation rate of the CSU system…
In summary, Derry continues to be appreciative of Escondido, the local community and the City government as its partner in education…
