Escondido Sunrise Rotary; Meeting to Serve our Community via Zoom; and “President Brian Farewell and Hail to President Chris…” June 25, 2020

Editor’s Note…

As we all try to conduct our professional pursuits in new ways, it’s appropriate to remind ourselves of who we are as a Serving Organization… Our accomplishments, our fellowship and the reminder of our many successes is valuable as we await the time we can gather together again…

So, we met via Zoom… On June 25…  Sunrise Rotary members talking about service and connecting through fellowship in new ways…

NOTICE: No Sunrise Rotary Meeting will be held on Thursday July 2!!

Our next online meeting will be Thursday July 9…

President Brian didn’t need a gavel or a bell… He brought HIS LAST  meeting to order with his greetings and good wishes… And his ‘Twinkle Bell’…

Past President George Beitner led the pledge to our nation’s Flag…

Past President Jack Anderson offered an invocation with heartfelt thankfulness that we survived COVID-19 and President Brian’s reign…

Sunrise Rotarians Serving, and Announcements:

Food for First Responders and Health Care Workers

An announcement was made about the food support project for healthcare workers and first responders… Funds were used for food from Rock and Jenny’s, Cocina del Charro and Cute Cakes to serve Escondido Fire Department and Police Department personnel recently… Approximately $500 remains in the fund… Expenditure plans are in the working stage…

Dixon Lake Services Supported by Sunrise Rotary and ‘Cabins by the Lake Charity’

Past Presidents Mike Dunlap and Rich Aeling described some support efforts at Dixon Lake… Recently club members were updated on the pontoon boat and the family that used the boat recently…  After becoming aware of the family situation with a disabled father and teen aged children; Sunrise Rotary provided fishing and camping permits and fishing equipment for the whole family…

Also at Dixon Lake, new play equipment and benches were installed near the boat ramp picnic area. Sunrise Rotary, Escondido Rotary and Hidden Valley Kiwanis partnered to bring about the new play area amenities… Nearly

$90 thousand was invested by the various service clubs and Cabins by the Lake to make these improvements happen…

Program:

President Brian offered a ‘reprise’ on his Rotary year…

In Memoriam

Two Sunrise Rotarians passed this year…

Bill Dopp, a long time member and an active supporter of charities in Uganda. Pictured in his Rotary work is Bill with Past President Dave Herbert on a trip to Uganda and the vocational school we have supported there… Past President Dave commented that experiences like he had with Bill Dopp really show that ‘Rotary Brings us Together’…

Past President John Masson passed this spring after a long battle with cancer… John is shown in these photos actively engaged with Sunrise Rotary service projects…. A City Council member, John was fully engaged with his beloved Escondido community…

President Brian proceeded to remind us of his stellar attendance as he assumed the Presidency in July, 2019… He claims his purpose was to give President Elect Chris Miller a full taste of what lay ahead in Chris’ future… But??

Brian reminded us that he was missing to attend the celebration of the Wyandotte Indian Nation in Oklahoma…  Pictured with his real ‘Indian Princess’ Nancy is her brother at the event…

President Brian also missed some meetings to attend the annual Balloon Festival in Albuquerque New Mexico… Seems his children and grandchildren in New Mexico take precedent over his Rotary responsibilities…

The saga of President Brian’s bell cannot be overlooked… Stolen 5, or is it 6 times?? The prestigious Presidential Bell was not controlled at all by our prestigious President…

Not only is the Bell still missing, but there were threats to the well-being of his gavel as well… This photo montage shows the various stages of ‘bellnap’ and ransom hanky-panky that took place this year…

Grape Day 5K Update:

Past Presidents Jim Ponder and Jeff Johnson provided insight as to the activities that will be the 2020 Grape Day 5K…

2020 is our tenth year of hosting this great community event…  Work is ongoing with the County of San Diego for their grant support… Some of our key sponsors will not be part of our virtual event this year…

Sunrise Rotary members will need to step up and play an important role in our fundraising and support efforts. Much that the Club accomplishes each year is due to the fundraising success of the Grape Day 5K event…

Participants in a virtual race will still receive the SWAG gifts for participating…

President Brian concluded his portion of the program by describing the value Escondido Sunrise brought to the local, regional and international communities this year.

$71,621 was shared with so many community partners…

Among those receiving support were; The Multiple Sclerosis Association, Bikes 4 Kids, Boys and Girls Club, YMCa, Police Dept. Cadet Program, Education Compact, Fisher House at Camp Pendleton, Text books for Guatemalan youth, the community of Mexicali and Neighborhood Health Care to name but a few…

We all can proudly say we served our community very well…

President Elect Chris Miller…

Chris was told by Past President Brian that his gavel, name tag and pin were all waiting for him…

Now, we will see if Brian ‘skips out’ on Chris’ first few meetings like he did during his own Presidency… Hold on Chris, the goodies are coming… And, maybe a Bell…

Chris, still filled with the Kool-Ade from the PETS seminar, spoke about his goals for the year… He did mention that he was ‘looking forward to his Past President’s Plaque at the end of his year as President… Wait a minute, Chris… you’re just getting started…

Chris spoke about goals including being active partners with the ‘Solutions for Change’ organization that does such excellent work with the homeless in our region. He spoke about ensuring that each member know the value in their membership; and our work to strengthen our Rotary Brand… Along with consistent followup with members and guests and enhancing the Club’s social media presence…

Chris closed his comments with this thought on the year 2020...

Let's all work together as Sunrise Rotary members to make this year the best ever!!

President Brian’s Demotion:

Keep the date in mind, July 18… Contact Past President Dave Herbert to make your reservations…

Rotarians Having Fun…

Past President Jim Ponder and Erin enjoying back country hikes in the Mammoth area…

Keep your ‘fun’ photos coming to President Chris…

Next Week’s Meeting:

There is no meeting on July2… Enjoy your Independence Day celebration…

The next meeting will be via Zoom on Thursday July 9…

Support for our Escondido Community …

Our great community and the success of its businesses is all of our responsibilities… Support the businesses that are doing all they can to survive during this challenging time… Take out some chow… Be ready to support them when the economy begins working again…

The ‘Giving Arch’ on Grand Avenue and Centre City Parkway reminds us that Escondido is a caring, giving community…

To all; be safe and be well…. God Bless those men and women that carry the load at our medical facilities, and God Bless the first responders… May our governmental leaders be wise, thoughtful and smart as this pandemic is overtaken by our hard work and collective support…
