Grape Day 5K… An update;
Rorie Johnston also shared the efforts undertaken to insure the community is aware the the Escondido Sunrise Grape Day 5K event will take place, inspire of the cancelation of the Grape Day Festival by the Escondido History Center…Rorie worked closely with local newspapers, and gained some additional publicity for our event…

District Governor Mel Gallegos was introduced by President Dave; formerly a member of the El Cajon Breakfast Club (following his wife Judy “Hey-Jude” Gallegos into that club); he and Judy are now members of the San Diego Downtown Breakfast Club.
Mel’s background is in the medical field as a nurse, and he was drawn to Rotary because of the Polio Plus Program and the opportunity to serve health-deprived individuals in third-world countries… Mel attended the 1996 Rotary International convention in Calgary and really learned about fellowship and friendship in Rotary. From that point forward, he has been engaged in numerous local, regional and international Rotary projects and programs, leading to him being our District Governor…

Mel spoke about the importance of mentoring new members, and that each of us can ‘open doors’ in Rotary service to other members. He spoke about Rotarians like Marty Peters (Past District Governor) and Jack Campbell (a polio victim) of the Escondido Club, engaging Mel in efforts to treat polio worldwide. Mel commented that many people have ‘opened doors’ of service for him as part of his commitment to Rotary Service…
Governor Mel encouraged all of us to keep growing our Clubs; our international goal this year is to have a net gain in membership, in years past our membership levels have remained stable…He encouraged us to attend the District Conference this year to be held at the Catamaran Hotel in San Diego, March 1-3, 2019…Reminding us of the International Theme, “Be the Inspiration”, he encouraged us to keep building our Rotary strength of serving by building on the success of those that have gone before us…
