Grape Day 5K “Ten + 1” Event…Update…

Past President Jeff Johnson updated Sunrise Rotarians on the status of the event and the important work that is assigned for Saturday Morning…

Past President Jeff distributed the safety vests for those working the 5K route, and also had some ‘official’ Grape Day 5K Tee Shirts for newer members…

The status of fundraising and participant ‘gathering was shared… $91,703 has been collected to date; more is pledged, this is accounting for actual cash received…

To go along with the fundraising, 558 participants are registered for the race and another 104 paid as virtual participants… Quick math shows that 662 paid participants have registered… Not quite at our goal of 1,000, but last minute signups will happen…

Jeff spoke about the importance of insuring that sponsoring donors that have contributed $250 are included on our donor thank you banner…

The banner is being prepared by All Star signs and the deadline for insuring the inclusion of donors was Friday, October 1.

Jeff spoke about on course assignments to direct the participants as they traverse the course. He thanked all that had volunteered for this responsibility…

Jeff also requested that all Sunrise Rotary members be available to help with the day-of-event activities and to be at Grape Day Park by 7:00 AM on Saturday the 9th…

Past President, Dave Herbert; The “Fundraising Teams Cheerleader” commented that the Viper Team, under the Captaincy of Past President, Rich Aeling raised the most funds, a total of $21,405 and that Past President, John Boyce’s Sundown Team was a close second at $18,655 and among all the teams, the Sundown Team was the only team with 100% participation by team members in the fundraising effort…

Jeff also mentioned that participant packets could be picked up at the Chamber of Commerce on October 7th between 4:30 and 7:00 PM… The opportunity will reduce the congestion of packet pick up on Saturday morning…

A photo of the packet distribution taking place on October 7 at the Chamber of Commerce…

Program…

Past President, Mike Dunlap introduced members of the San Felipe Rotary Club… Mike has worked with the Club through the Rotary Foundation to helped fund a hospice care center in San Felipe…

Mike and Tina Sweeney were on Zoom with us from San Felipe… The San Felipe Rotary Club has about 38 members and meets from October through May… Most of the members are American ex-pats who winter-over in San Felipe…

The club works hard during those nine months to raise funds for their community projects… Fundraising efforts include a ‘Breakfast in the Park’ a ‘Tamale Festival’ and ‘A Taste of San Felipe’ effort coordinated with local restaurants.

The focus for their fundraising is to support education, public safety and healthy life style programs for the lower income local residents of San Felipe…

Scolarship programs involving many young peope, including a growing number of young ladies (123 girls in the academic efforts) are critical to developing the educational strength of the community youth…

Included are a youth orchestra and a program to provide Christmas Gift Bags for the very poor children in town.

Much of their efforts are also active in supporting public safety enhancements…  Paramedic Training is important as is search-and-rescue training for the firefighters and first responders. A new effort in haz-mat training has taken on a greater importance as a new highway on the east side of the Baja Peninsula will draw more truck traffic, often hauling hazardous material….

The Opportunity Drawing is Back…

Tickets are available at each Sunrise Rotary meeting…

Big Pot this week… $676; ‘Red Badger’, Judy Fitzgerald had the lucky ticket… Sorry, Judy, the ticket was not so lucky…

Support for our Escondido Community …

Our great community and the success of its businesses is all of our responsibilities… Support the businesses that are doing all they can to survive during this challenging time… Take out some chow… Be ready to support them when the economy begins working again…

The ‘Giving Arch’ on Grand Avenue and Centre City Parkway reminds us that Escondido is a caring, giving community…

To all; be safe and be well…. God Bless those men and women that carry the load at our medical facilities, and God Bless the first responders… May our governmental leaders be wise, thoughtful and smart as this pandemic is overtaken by our hard work and collective support…
