Programs:
March 1: Eric Pahlke presented a program on San Diego (and Escondido) victorian homes. Affiliated with the Save Our Heritage Organization (SOHO), Eric began photographing and compiling the history of many San Diego victorian buildings. His presentation also involved some of the history of San Diego relating to railroad access and the competition with Los Angeles.
In his presentation, he also highlighted some of the Escondido properties that are part of our city’s architectural history…

March 8: Dick Fisher discussed the history of Alcatraz as a prison, and his personal history on the ‘rock’ as the child of a prison guard. He talked about some of the more notorious inmates and attempts at escape. While the history includes some notorious criminals, he also discussed the life of the families that resided on the island.

March 15: This program, presented by Chrisanne Moats of the Escondido Arts Parnership was introduced by Brian Murphy. Chrisanne spoke about the varied exhibits held throughout the year featuring a variety of art forms and artists. The Partnership focuses on local artists in many of their exhibits, working closely with downtown businesses to draw visitors to the downtown. The Partnership also presents the weekly farmers market on Grand Avenue.
The upcoming Panache event was also highlighted, and Chrisanne thanked Sunrise Rotary for our generous gift supporting this major event for the partnership.

March 22: Past President George Beitner introduced the program, Jack Olmstead, a docent with the San Diego Museum of Man. Jack shared with us about the major discovery in 1992 of a Mastodon as the Highway 54 project was being excavated. This paleontological find, dates back 130,000 years, and represented that man was likely in this area as well as some of the bones were broken likely with a crude tool. This is a major discovery in that man was, up to this time, believed to have been in North America 15,000 years ago. Jack’s information was interesting, as he also described some of the exhibits at the Museum of Man, all available to visitors to Balboa Park.
