Program:
Today we had an opportunity to hear the latest on affordable housing challenges in San Diego County. Lori Holt Pfeiler, former Mayor of Escondido and currently the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity spoke about their great program to enable homeownership in the county.
Lori Pfeiler speaking to our Club members…

Lori shared some facts about the cost of home construction, especially the cost of permits that drive up the cost of housing; regulatory permits from a variety of agencies equate in cost to 40% of new construction.
Habitat for Humanity raises funds and gains sweat equity from the prospective homeowner… Additionally, they conduct a number of ‘blitz builds’ during which a group of volunteers will build a house or two in a week… Projects like this may be sponsored by Home Depot or other such employers who work with their employees to create these great community service opportunities. Recently a few of our members, Linda Bailey, Rorie Johnston and Tina Pope participated in a ‘Women Build’ project… During a specific period of time, all of the ‘builders’ were ladies… Great job Linda, Rorie and Tina!!

The need for Habitat and it’s projects is very great as San Diego County is the lease affordable housing region in the country when one considers cost of housing and income levels… Housing is more expensive in LA and the Bay Area, however their salary averages are higher…
Habitat pre-qualifies its applicants; waiting lists are extensive for home projects… They also provide a 0% interest loan to the owners, with loan payments going back to Habitat to be ‘recycled’ for future home owners.
