Program:

Anne Steffari, Superintendent of the Escondido Union High School  District was introduced as our program speaker by Tina Pope, a Trustee of the Board of Education for the District.

Anne has been Superintendent for a whopping 3 months… But is “Back Home” as her first teaching job was at San Pasqual HS… Anne has over 30 years of experience in the field, including teaching in Escondido, teacher and administrator in Valley Center, Administrator back in Escondido, Superintendent in Ramona and now back as our Superintendent…

She acknowledged and thanked many Rotarians for all of the support that the District’s students receive from community programs such as Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce and Education COMPACT, noting that all aspects of our community are partners in educating our youth.

Anne Steffari presenting to Sunrise Rotarians…

Anne commented that the District serves 7,100 students in the four compressive high schools (San Pasqual, Orange Glen, Escondido, Del Lago) along with Valley High School and the Adult School…

District enrollment is stable and declining a bit primarily due to the high cost of housing and living in California. Competition from charter schools also impacts District enrollment numbers.

Anne spoke about District goals for our comprehensive educational programs; Safe, Healthy and High Performing programs…

Safety is a major concern as the District works with the community on issues such as addiction, gangs, and the ability to work through conflicts… All life skills that will serve our young people well in the future, and with any of them continuing to be problematic in young lives, they have lifetime deleterious impact…

Healthy schools also work towards solving issues of substance abuse, and enabling students to learn that choices and decisions have lasting impact on them and their ability to grow and mature. Also related to this are healthy social and emotional skills… Also focusing on teaching self-awareness and self-discipline…

Finally, High Performance goals relate to academic preparation, including Math, English language and other aspects of academic achievement that will open future doors for our youth…
