Escondido Sunrise Rotary; Meeting to Serve our Community in Person and via Zoom; and “San Diego County District Attorney, Summer Stephan with an Update”…June 16, 2022

As we all try to conduct our professional pursuits in new ways, it’s appropriate to remind ourselves of who we are as a Serving Organization… Our accomplishments, our fellowship and the reminder of our many successes is valuable as we seek new opportunities to serve…

We met again in person at the Chamber of Commerce… Great to enjoy the fellowship again and see all your smiling faces…

As a Club, we honored our nation with a salute to our Flag led by Past President, Brian Murphy…

And, an invocation was offered by Past President, Jack Anderson…

As part of the invocation, Jack offered the sad news to Sunrise Rotarians, that Past President, Dave Herbert’s wife, Kathy had passed away… We all knew that Dave was spending extra time caring for his family in recent weeks, however all were shocked at the news…

Kathy and Dave were a fixture at Sunrise Rotary activities, she was often volunteering right along side Dave… Thankfully, their daughter, Sarah Caity, was home with her Mom and Dad over the past few weeks… Dave is thankful for all Sunrise Rotarians’ prayers and support, but doesn’t have any specific needs during this time. Kathy’s obituary is on the website for the Alhiser Comer mortuary…

With Dave’s permission, I am posting two photos of Dave, Kathy and Sarah Caity at Dave’s Presidential Demotion in 2019… May God Bless the Herbert Family and Kathy’s memory…

NEWS FLASH… BREAKING NEWS!!

A Bomb Scare in the Sunrise Rotary Meeting…

Just as President Richard began his stellar leadership of another Rotary meeting, an Escondido Police Officer appeared at the meeting warning Club Members of a reported explosive device at the location of our meeting…

The photo below shows the device that was suspected to be a planted explosive in the meeting… The detonator is located inside of the wooden box that serves as the stand for the Presidential Bell…

The Police Department, acting quickly on the reported explosive device; detained the suspected perpetrator and placed him in handcuffs…

With the report, came the need for a member of the Escondido “Bomb Squad” to attempt to dismantle the device before any harm could be done to the Sunrise Rotary members or the Chamber of Commerce meeting room…

After seizing the suspected bomb, and determining that it was primarily an anti-theft warning device for the President’s Bell; President Richard was released from custody and our meeting was able to continue…

Sunrise Rotarians are extremely thankful for the quick response of the Escondido Police Department…

Program

Tina Inscoe introduced the program and speaker for the day… Summer Stephan is the District Attorney for San Diego County, overseeing criminal prosecution through a team of over 1,000 attorneys… San Diego County is the 5th largest county in the country, and along with that size comes all varieties of criminal activity…

District Attorney, Summer Stephan, speaking to Sunrise Rotarians…

Victim Services:

Victim safety is a key part of the District Attorney’s focus on combatting crime… The DA’s office is the largest provider of victims services, and cares for over 1,000 victims each year…

The DA receives crime data from all law enforcement agencies and has monthly meeting with all cities’ Police Chiefs and the Sheriff to stay ahead of trends… As data shows, crime issues are not localized to a particular jurisdiction, but can move across jurisdictional boundaries quickly…

Crime Issues Involving Schools:

The DA works closely with the 42 school districts in the County… Recent concerns relative to the pandemic caused schools to close. This disconnection with students impacted youth safety, mental health and increased the potential for on-line radicalization…

The DA’s office works closely with data bases that report on internet crimes against children… In the spring of 2020, there were an average of 150 internet crimes involving children per month… In the spring of this year, there were over 500 incidences under investigation relating to internet crimes involving children…

Impact of Drugs on the Region:

One of the greatest challenges relative to drug abuse in the region is the aspect of fentanyl… Unfortunately, youth experiment with drugs often found in their home medicine cabinet, while the drug trade has begun adding fentanyl to other drugs…

2 mg of fentanyl can kill… The drug cartels create counterfeit meds that look like a normal drug, but now include fentanyl…overdoses rose from 152 in 2019 to over 800 in 2021…

In the past, law enforcement pursued drug dealers and prosecuted them for the sale of drugs… More recently, especially with fentanyl and the deadly overdoses, the DA’s office is going after these dealers with murder charges…

Family Justice Issues:

Family-related crimes such as domestic abuse and violence call out for special referral services to ensure a continuity of care for victims…The DA is creating the North County Family Justice Center with 70 partner agencies to deal with a variety of criminal issues including human trafficking, domestic violence, elder abuse and similar family justice-related crimes…

Mental Health Concerns:

The DA’s office is creating Crisis Evaluation Centers to enable local police to secure holds where needed for homeless individuals involved in criminal activity related to mental illness and substance abuse…

District Attorney Stephan graciously accepted and responded to a number of questions from the members after her presentation…

District Attorney, Summer Stephan is pictured with Sunrise Rotary President, Richard Agnew…

Big Opportunity this week was $301… Past President, Tony Criss picked the lucky card… OOPS Tony, not so quick… The card was not so lucky…

The consolation prize was $21… Past President, Jack Anderson had the lucky ticket and gets to enjoy a lunch on Rotary…

The ‘Giving Arch’ on Grand Avenue and Centre City Parkway reminds us that Escondido is a caring, giving community…

To all; be safe and be well…. God Bless those men and women that carry the load at our medical facilities, and God Bless our first responders… May our governmental leaders be wise, thoughtful and smart as this pandemic is overtaken by our hard work and collective support…

Technical Support for Online Meetings:
