Program:

John Schwab introduced our guests from Solutions for Change… Debra Sallaz is the Development Associate with Solutions, and the Founder is Chris Megison.

Debra Sallaz speaking to Sunrise Rotarians regarding ways that our members can connect with the program and their efforts to overcome homeless problems in the North County region…

Chris Megison began his presentation by sharing a story of how, as a young Marine, he served as a volunteer at a shelter in Oceanside… Reluctant at first, he later found a way to become directly involved with the clients…

Chris Megison sharing his passion for helping the homeless to recover and rejoin society as productive community members…

Chris focused on the simple path to recovery from the issues that plague the homeless population; primarily by helping them to find a purpose in life, and to take responsibility for their situation.  He used the Marine Corps theme of       “Get up — Suit Up — Show Up” as preparing people to be successful and stay out of the homeless/addictive cycle…

He also spoke about Solutions focus as creating ‘Social Entrepreneurship’ opportunities for their clients. Some of their work effort with clients began by selling newspapers on street corners… at one point, Solutions had contracts with four daily newspapers… Now, they also have an aquaponics farm, and all of their clients learn life responsibilities through having work to carry out daily…

Solutions also has forgone receiving Federal dollars for their programs, because they were required to allow heroin use to continue among clients… Chris’ comments were strongly focused on being chemical free in order to overcome the homeless cycle…

The following visuals reflect Solutions for Change’s program essentials as they serve our communities…
