President Dave presided over our meeting in fine fashion; Past President Jeff Johnson led our Patriotic Salute to our great Flag, and Past President Jack Anderson offered an invocation.

Father Bill Dopp was ‘Back home in Indiana’ and brought President Dave an ‘Indiana Cow’… And a snow globe… Fun, fun, fun…

 

Past President Jim Ponder brought some goodies to President Dave from the highly successful fishing outing to Mammoth… A bottle of craft beer and a coffee cup from the Virginia Lakes Resort… If you can’t catch ‘em. you bring a coffee cup home… Way cool!!

Past President and Foundation Chair, Kevin Svetich announced our standing in per capita giving in District 5340… Escondido Sunrise is in 4th place with $408 per capita just a scosh behind Rancho Bernardo at $416… Encinitas Coastal discovered a Club bit-coin reserve; they’re at $948 and Carlsbad is at $526…

With shouts of ‘We’re Number 4!!’ Past President Kevin Svetich encouraged us to all dig a little deeper for the Rotary Foundation… And, Kevin announced another Paul Harris Fellow award for one of our Club members…

Program:

 

Past President Jack Anderson introduced today’s speakers, Patty Huerta, Executive Director of the Education COMPACT and Mirjana Rodriguez a youth program manager for COMPACT. 

Mirjana presented to Club Members regarding the COMPACT ‘Project Hero’ mentoring program. She commented that statistics show that over 43,000 youth in San Diego County are disengaged; meaning they are not in school and not working. This situation leads to the youth joining gangs, abusing drugs and alcohol along with other societal challenges they may find themselves in. The Project Hero program connects young people with mentors who engage with the youth and help guide them to good life decisions.

COMPACT programs such as Project Hero represent an investment by the community in our young people. Time spent with youth facing difficult times often leads to improved grades, and a more positive outlook on life… And to opportunities to find work… Mirjana and Patty encouraged Club members to become involved; there is a positive training program and regular opportunities for support from COMPACT staff. 

 

Past President Barry Baker commented that he has recently become involved as an accountability monitor for youth court offenders. Young people that have been arrested have an opportunity to avoid entry into the Juvenile Justice system through the COMPACT Diversion program. In concert with the Escondido Police Department and the School Districts; young offenders undergo a trial by their peers with sentencing to include community service, letters of apology and restitution as appropriate. Barry meets regularly with his assigned youth to help him/her complete their ‘sentence’… He commented that his student’s grades have improved markedly as his focus has been directed after his brush with crime…
