President Dave commented on the fundraising support for Fire victims in Redding and Mendocino… In addition to Escondido Sunrise making a $500 gift to each coordinating group, our members raised nearly $2,500 which will also be divided between the support organizations involved with each fire… Great job Sunrise Rotarians!!

Program:
Our program today was introduced by Doug Shultz… Jessica Livingston works as a volunteer with the African Promise Foundation, focusing their efforts in Northern Uganda. Many of the people they serve are Internally Displaced Persons within Uganda due to much internal fighting within the country. Over 1.7 million people are residing in these camps, with great need for clean water, education, food and protection of women and children from abduction. Records show that approximately 3,000 children are abducted per year, placed into human trafficking situations including slavery and prostitution. The most prevalent health issues facing these people is HIV/Aids infection…
Jessica spoke about the founder of The African Promise Foundation, Suzy Gilles, and the focus on raising funds and recruiting volunteers to serve the people of Northern Uganda. Education remains a key need, as public school, when available, is only available for the first seven years of school. Additional schooling beyond that point costs about $35 per month/student; this includes educational materials and meals… A small cost for such an important impact for the country… Club member, Father Bill Dopp shared his experience in working with the people of Uganda, and confirmed the needs shared by Jessica.
