THE MISSING BELL…

The Bell reappeared… Good news for President Brian… But, the Prez is taking two weeks off from Rotary… He’s going to the Wyandotte Pow Wow with his Indian Princess, Nancy…  But, he will miss our District Governor Marta Knight on September 19…

Past Presidents… This is a huge ‘finable offense’… This lack of regard for Rotary protocol is near-unforgivable…

While President-Elect Chris Miller will handle things in excellent fashion… We hope!!

President Brian is shown briefing the President-Elect on the intricacies of running a Rotary meeting… Go for it Chris!!

Past President Mike O’Malley attended a Navy Reunion at the Naval Academy… Also spending some time in Washington, DC, he brought the President a nice shot glass… It describes portions based on branches of military service… Brian was disappointed in the small ration allotted for Air Force flyboys…

Program:

Today’s program was San Diego Habitat for Humanity; Executive Director, Lori Holt Pfeiler (former Mayor of Escondido) spoke about Habitat’s goals in building affordable housing while engaging the community and the future owners in completing these unique housing projects.

Lori Holt Pfeiler speaking to Sunrise Rotarians about the challenges of building affordable housing in San Diego County…

Lori described the Mission of Habitat for Humanity… Providing affordable housing engaging the future owners in ‘sweat equity’ investment in their future home…

Lori spoke about the average income in San Diego County of $86,000 per year which makes the purchase of housing a real challenge … essentially, a $300-400,000 home is what can be afforded by the average family. Yet, the average house in San Diego County sells for $635,000… And, the real challenge is the decline in housing production in recent years… This chart reflects the number of housing units built over the years…

A big challenge in developing and building are the fees assessed for project necessities, e.g. development cost, utilities, and construction. Often, Habitat works deals with cities to use excess land, so land cost is often a minimal part of the development equation…

Another issue that is a real challenge in project construction are the surprises that come along in the project approval process…Often, even when starting the planning process early, side-by-side with the cities, surprises come along late in the planning and development process, causing cost overruns and time delays…
