Escondido Sunrise Rotary; Meeting to Serve our Community in Person
and “Who Am I Fellowship Breakfast with Dave Herbert”
March 7, 2023
As we all try to conduct our professional pursuits in new ways, it’s appropriate to remind ourselves of who we are as a Serving Organization… Our accomplishments, our fellowship and the reminder of our many successes is valuable as we seek new opportunities to serve…
We met again in person at the Chamber of Commerce… Great to enjoy the fellowship again and see all your smiling faces…
As a Club, we honored our nation with a salute to our Flag led by past Beverly Marchetti and an invocation was offered by past President Jack Anderson….

Past President Rich Aeling brought back a gift to our president from Hawaii. He talked about the wonderful time he had with Donna as they toured the island on a helicopter, they saw The Arizona Memorial among other amazing places, welcome back Rich!!
The truss build for Mexicali went well with a lot of people helping. R&R Construction donated all of the lumber (thank you Brad Allaband for the connection). The cost this year will be minimal because of all of the donated supplies. Along with R&R Construction, Berg Electric donated the electrical supplies. There are 22 people going down to Mexicali on Thursday 3/14 through Sunday. Thank you to everyone involved this year for our annual project that will bless this community so much!!
Here are some pics from the Palomar Foundation breakfast that was on 3/6
Also, past President Jim Ponder came back from Catalina Island with gifts for president Mark

Program:
Who Am I? by Past Presidents Dave Herbert & Bob Burson
Past President Dave Herbert (2018-2019)
Dave is a 5th generation Californian and 4th generation San Diegan; he was born in the same hospital room as his father. He lived in Talmadge, La Jolla and finally in Rancho Santa Fe. Dave is the 2nd of 4 boys, he graduated from San Dieguito High School, then went to college for awhile to Palomar. He then transferred to Washington State and got his degree from Cal State Long Beach in 1974 in criminal justice, he then joined the San Deigo Sheriff’s Department in 1975 where he served 30 years. He did various jobs at the sheriff’s department such as a sergeant and hostage negotiator all while getting his master’s degree in forensics. He also got married the first time to another deputy sheriff and they stayed together for 2 years. He met the love of his life, Kathy in 1985 and their first date was the famous football game where Joe Theisman broke his leg. They had 1 daughter named Katie who was the official mascot of The Escondido Sunrise Rotary and she went on as an adult to be a Rotarian.
Dave joined the Fallbrook Rotary in 1996 because he was promised a promotion which never came but being a Rotarian must have stuck because he joined ESR and became president in 2018. He retired in 2005 and traveled a ton with his wife Kathy. Unfortunately, Kathy passed away 2 years ago in June and she is greatly missed.
Dave summed it all up by saying that rotary has been an anchor for him and kept him going down a good path. One more fun fact, Dave has a perfect attendance record, which is an amazing feat!!
Thank you, Dave, for sharing your story with us and we are so glad you have made ESR your lifetime rotary club!!
Bob Burson (2011-2012)
**I apologize ahead of time because I had voice recorded Bob’s presentation and it wasn’t really clear**
Rosemary (Bob’s beautiful wife) put together his notes which everyone thought was funny!! Good job Rosemary!! During covid Rosemary got involved with genealogy and discovered that Bob’s great grandfather was born on 7/4/1776 and when he made his way west after the Civil War, he carried his own coffin because he was afraid there would be a shortage of wood.
Bob grew up in Lake County which is between Santa Rosa and Sacramento, Rosemary’s family move there as well so that’s how they got to know each other. They started dating when Bob was graduating college and they married shortly after. They moved to San Diego where he was a CPA until he retired, they raised 3 boys and have 5 grandkids.
Bob was president 2011-2012 where he has served as ESR’s treasurer. Bob also wrote 7 books on finance and now that he’s retired, he is starting to write again.
He said that Escondido Sunrise Rotary has been a blessing to him and he appreciates all the years!!
