District 5340 Governor, Dan Gensler spoke to us about Rotary, Locally and Internationally…

Bret Geerhaert introduced Governor Dan… A member of the Coronado Rotary Club, he’s been a Club President and active in Rotary locally and worldwide for 30 years…

District Governor, Dan Gensler speaking to Sunrise Rotary members…

Dan spoke about Rotary as a service group… Initially, his intent was to increase contacts for his business through his Rotary membership…

He soon discovered that there was more to Rotary than ‘business lunches’… He found that people would ASK him to become involved… Initially, he resisted a bit; then he learned the joy of serving others, first through small international projects in Mexico, then on a larger world-wide stage as he traveled and served in South Africa and South America.

Dan commented that it’s been said that, “Service is the rent we pay for occupying space on earth”…

He noted specifically a service effort in South Africa led by an Irish nun, Sister Ethel Normoyle founded the Missionvale Care Center near Port Elizabeth in South Africa…

Faced with the Apartheid challenges, her efforts were met with violent resistance; however she persevered through her faith, compassion and love for those suffering extreme poverty…

Governor Dan joined a group that journeyed to South Africa to provide support… He shared the stories of the Center ultimately being approved by the “Toms” footwear company to receive shoes… something the children at the center never had available to them…

Continuing to share the story, he talked about how he was inspired by the commitment of Sister Ethel… He also discovered during his times of service that often needs could be met, just by asking… He encouraged us to increase our Rotary service involvement and to always remember all that is needed is to ASK…

Dan shared the message from Rotary International President, Shekhar Mehta that growth of Rotary is critical. He encouraged us to “Each One Bring One” and for “Each One to Keep One”…

The ‘Giving Arch’ on Grand Avenue and Centre City Parkway reminds us that Escondido is a caring, giving community…

To all; be safe and be well…. God Bless those men and women that carry the load at our medical facilities, and God Bless the first responders… May our governmental leaders be wise, thoughtful and smart as this pandemic is overtaken by our hard work and collective support…
