We met again in person at the Chamber of Commerce… Great to enjoy the fellowship again and see all your smiling faces…

Kendra Koed, Jim Ponder and Kelly Mayberry were having some fun on a 32-mile bike ride. Jim was bragging on Kendra on how well she did!!
It looks like our infamous bell is having some fun of its own traveling around but our president Mark is narrowing it down to 3 places and who might have it……
5K Update:
It looks like the Padres have a slight lead over the Yankees with the Pirates and the Diamond Backs closing in!! We are now over $91k with 525 registered for the race, awesome work everyone!!
Our annual 5K is only 29 days away!! George Beitner passed out the proofs for the banner and Jim Ponder asked everyone to put the card fliers on all of the Starbucks community boards and remember to wear your orange team shirts to next week’s meeting

Program:
Our speaker today is Dr. Dan Calac with Indian Health Care and was introduced by past President John Boyce who, by the way Dr. Calac worked for many years ago before he became a doctor. Dr. Calac thanked the Boyce’s for giving him a job at Kuske all those years ago and talked about what it meant to him to work there and John mentioned that Dan is the first employee of his that actually became a doctor.
Dr. Calac has served as the CMO (Chief Medical Officer) since 2003. Indian Health provides onsite outreach services and programs to nearly 5k clients and provides 20k visits per year. He contracts part time with the Elizabeth Hospice, providing hospice care and emotional support for the terminally ill and their family members. He also serves on the advisory board of directors for CSUSM and as a governance board member for a local all tribes Charter school located on the Rincon Indian Reservation.
Indian Health Council is a healthcare institution serving nine federally recognized consortium tribes of the Native American reservations in San Diego’s north county region.
This non-profit 501 (c) (3) entity occupies two Health Centers in Rincon and Santa Ysabel; headquartered in the Rincon Health Center.
Indian Health Council is collectively representative of several clinical divisions including: Medical, Dental, Behavioral Health, and Pharmacy. IHC operates under the guidance of its Administration Department and operates two Health Centers under with the tireless work from Support Services. A multitude of programs and services are performed through several other department including, but not limited to; Health Promotions, Research and Student Development and Tribal Family Services.
Founded in January 1970, Indian Health Council, Incorporated began providing bare-bones medical and dental services to the Native American communities of the San Diego, CA region. In 1976 IHC held a star-studded Grand Opening of its 5,000 sq. ft. facility on the Rincon Reservation. On hand for the opening were Courtney and Robert Kennedy Jr. In 1977 IHC installed a 3,800 sq. ft. modular unit on the Santa Ysabel Reservation to provide easier access for remote tribes to medical services. In 1992 the Indian Health Service honored IHC as “Most Outstanding Rural Indian Health Program in California.”
Initially proposed in 1991 IHC finally celebrated the Grand Opening of a state-of-the-art 51,000 sq. ft. facility adjacent to their long-time location on the Rincon Reservation in 2000. The IHC Rincon Health Center continues to serve as IHC's headquarters today. IHC created a California Native American Research Center for Health (CA-NARCH) in 2001 to promote greater Tribal control over consortium healthcare. Also, in 2001 IHC attained the prestigious Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Healthcare (AAAHC). AAAHC accreditation demonstrates IHC’s commitment to providing high quality healthcare and places continuous improvement at the center of our culture. Additional accreditation as both a Medical Home and a Dental Home recognizes IHC’s approach to patient centered care for all services delivered throughout the organization. This approach sets the foundation for delivering accessible, comprehensive, team-based continuity of care organized to meet the needs of the individual patient.
In 2003 IHC opened a second health center with a new 6,100 sq. ft. Santa Ysabel Community Health Center to continue serving top-tier medical and dental services to the more remote communities of San Diego’s Native American populations.
IHC celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2020 and continues to grow, innovate and work towards empowering native wellness into the future.
Indian Health Council partners with numerous grant funded programs and local institutions to implement culturally-aware programs and events promoting good health and mental wellness through a combination of modern medicine and traditional, cultural medicine practices.
Indian Health Council works to encourage, train and promote native people into positions in healthcare (CA-NARCH). The organization also works to enhance the work-experience for natives currently in courses of collegiate studies, research and development.
