Program:

Past President Mike Dunlap introduced Linda Sundram of the Camp Pendleton Rotary Club, and the leader of the Camp Pendleton Community Foundation.

Linda spoke about the unique relationship Rotary has with the Marines at Camp Pendleton. The needs of the young Marines and their families are often taken for granted as they change duty stations, often without a support network nearby …

Linda Sundram speaking to Sunrise Rotarians…

Linda spoke about the needs that many of the Marine families have when arriving from another duty station, or when experiencing a family illness. The Community Service program maintains a ‘Warrior Warehouse’ stocked with donated household items. A pick-up process for donated goods is staffed by Marines that are awaiting change of duty station, and are young and strong to handle furniture and other large household items. The program manages about 1,000 pickups per year throughout San Diego and Orange Counties.

The program is supported by the Camp Pendleton leadership, knowing how much it benefits young Marines and their families.

Linda spoke about the Memorial Wall that was erected at Camp Pendleton to honor the Marines from the First Marine Expeditionary Force ‘1 MEF’ that sacrificed their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. The idea for such a memorial was supported by 1 MEF Commander, General Dunford; and supported by community donations and many Rotary Clubs including Escondido Sunrise Rotary.

Past President Mike Dunlap provided the following information about the Community Foundation’s great work under Linda’s leadership…

"Linda Sundram’s charity’s website is www.cpcsf.org  I encourage our members to look at the site to see the kinds of things that Rotarians are doing locally to better the lives of the Marines who protect our freedom.

Linda’s email address is lindasundram1@gmail.com and her cell number is 760-415-9990.

As an aside, early in our conflict in Iraq a photo in the local paper showed 37 Marines and Navy Corpsmen who had lost their lives in combat and were being honored with a service on the base.  The photo showed rifles with bayonets stuck in the ground, helmets hung on the rifles, and a young Marine kneeling beside one of the sites, head bowed in sorrow.  Our club approached our District Governor and asked if we could raise funds to give each of the fallen a Paul Harris … PDG Mike Stelman ran with the idea  …  Rotary refused to accept funds and sent 37 medals, pins and ribbons  … a beautiful display case was made with the 37 PHF medals mounted  … and a Marine Colonel was sent from Camp Pendleton to a District Conference to accept the presentation of the display  ..  The Colonel, Joseph Dunford, was quite moved by the honor shown their fallen.  Dunford, whom Linda mentioned was to become Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, was active in enabling Linda, her club members with support from clubs including ESR, to build the memorial she described in her presentation.  The display case hangs in the White House on Camp Pendleton.  A letter from our District along with their PHF pins was mailed to each of the families of the deceased warriors.

Linda is an amazing Rotarian, as is her husband, PDG Larry Sundram!  I am continually amazed at the amount of good that they do helping others.  If you feel moved to send something to support their charity and the work it does for our young Marines, I am certain it will be appreciated."
