President Dave shared that Escondido Sunrise contributed $500 to Hurricane Florence victims through the Rotary International relief effort in North Carolina.
John Schwab returned from a tip to the Galapagos Islands… he brought a gift for the president, that was legal to ‘take’ from the islands… He didn’t bring the 150 proof sugar cane beverage that he mentioned, but he did bring a nice cocoa bar…
Father Bill Dopp announced that in a recent contact with the Vocational School in Uganda, they proudly are serving a total of 60 young people, half of whom are blind. Members will recall that Escondido Sunrise contributed to the building of the school, and Father Bill and President Dave visited there a few years ago…

Program:
President Dave, introduced our program, Past President Mark Hoekstra. Mark is in the commercial real estate business, and proceeded to inform Sunrise Club members about the “Ups and Downs of Real Estate” and the implications of politics and the economy…
Past President Mark speaking to Sunrise Rotary members…
Mark presented a historical perspective of the real estate changes through the years including the oil crises in ’73 and ’79; the Savings and Loan crisis in ’86; the Asian Flu crisis in the ‘90s and the 2008 real estate mortgage crisis. One of the major differences in some of these events, and their ability for recovery to take place was the localized, or world-wide impact of the crises. Especially, the 2008 mortgage banking crisis, had larger international implications, thus the recovery was slower than previous economic challenges. Mark shared a video clip from the movie “Too Big to Fail” which portrayed the dilemma of Wall Street in their effort to engage the public with reasons and solutions to the financial crisis of the time.
Mark commented on the various aspects of economic changes that affect real estate values and recoveries; including, unemployment, business confidence, consumer confidence, gradually increasing income and stable interest rates…
Mark speculated a bit about when there will be another downturn; however in the interest of the Rotary Four Way Test, the editor will not repeat his speculation… One might say, “we know the truth when it happens to us.”
Good questions engaged club members, and the program portion could have gone on for hours…
