Program:

Past President Mark Hoekstra introduced our speaker, Steve Becvar, Executive Director of the ALS Association of Greater San Diego. Steve has extensive experience in athletics administration at a number of universities, including the Air Force Academy, San Diego State and the University of San Diego. Previously he was involved with the Memphis Grizzlies of the NBA…

Steve recently assumed the Executive Director role for the ALS Association… The group continues to grow its fundraising efforts in support of ALS patients. Loaned equipment, support groups and efforts to help patients and their families to modify their property to enable the ALS patient to have the most comfort and support as possible while at home.

Steve Becvar addressing Sunrise Rotarians regarding the impacts of ALS and the support the Association provides…

Steve shared that there are four ALS chapters in California, with San Diego being the newest. The organization operates on $3 million a year, much of which goes to patient support and research support at the national level. There are 39 ALS support chapters nationally, San Diego is the 35th to be formed. Much effort is coordinated with an ALS certified “Center of Excellence” at UC San Diego. The goal of the medical support at UCSD is to help patients ‘get ahead’ of the disease… Steve closed his presentation with information about local ALS patients and their particular needs; such as ramps, door widenings, and the like. Club member showed an interest in assisting with local needs…
