Programs:

Past President Mark Hoekstra introduced our program; California State University, San Marcos and the opportunity to support local scholarships. The University was represented by Kyle Button, Associate Vice President for Development for the university and Lauren Tucker, Director of Corporate Relations.

Prior to the presentation, Mark spoke briefly about our club’s goal of establishing a scholarship endowment with the University to engage with the youth of our community, support education, connect college students with Rotary and to support a Rotaract Club on the campus of CSUSM. Mark will head a Scholarship Committee to serve in an advisory role to the Sunrise Rotary Board regarding this scholarship program; the initial membership of the Scholarship Committee consists of: Mark Hoekstra, Rich Aeling, John Boyce, Brian Murphy, Mark Maus, Linda Bailey, Alan Miller, Gloria Leffler, Barry Baker and Jack Anderson.

Ms. Lauren Tucker spoke about the University, it’s growth and focus. CSUSM is the newest in the California State University system’s 29 campuses. The service area is North San Diego County, and southern Riverside and Orange Counties. The university focuses on underserved residents of the region, and 50% of the enrollees are first generation college attendees. Of note is the university’s close relationship with local business and industries to the end, that 80% of CSUSM’s graduates remain in the North County region after graduation.

Escondido is a partner with the university through the MAP program, enabling local students that meet certain criteria being guaranteed admission to CSUSM. These efforts, enabled through agreements with school districts facilitate the local focus of the university to represent the demographics of the North County region. Another focus of the university is to work on four-year graduation rates of its students.

September 28:

This program was preparation for the Grape Day 5K Event. Past Presidents Jim Ponder, Jeff Johnson, George Beitner presented the background of the hard work we do as a club to raise funds for our charitable efforts and to stage this growing event.

This year we have grown our primary sponsorship efforts to include Palomar Health Foundation and have maintained strong connections to Berg Electric with our primary beneficiary remaining as the Multiple Sclerosis Society of the South Coast.

Jim challenged us to remember our “Why Rotary” perspective as we work to conduct this largest of our community outreach programs. The success of this event sets the stage for all the good things we do throughout the year…

In addition to all the good we do through our philanthropic efforts, this event is a huge draw to downtown Escondido… We are the place to be!!

Jeff and George spoke about all of the details that will take place to ensure a successful event. From gathering goodies for the swag bags, to packing the bags, to volunteering on race day to support all the participants; it is truly an “all hands” event for Escondido Sunrise Rotary.

Much has gone into fundraising and gaining partners for our event; and as of mid-day on October 6, we had 964 participants,,, almost reaching our goal of 1,000 and more will come on race day.

Photo of Past Presidents George Beitner and Mike O’Malley with the mock-up of the sponsor sign that will be ‘hhhuuuuggge’ and proudly displayed on race day…

October 5:

Today’s program was presented by San Diego County Third District Supervisor, Kristin Gaspar. She is our supervisor, and a great supporter of our Club; she is also a Rotarian in the Encinitas Club and shared her thoughts on Rotary Service and how it relates to her role in County leadership.

As Kristin began her presentation, an opportunity was taken by Linda Bailey to thank Kristin for her contribution to our Grape Day 5K Charity event… She contributed $15,000 from her Supervisor Community Charitable Fund… Thanks Kristin!!

Kristin Gaspar speaking to our Club members…

Ms. Gaspar shared about her role as a member of the Board of Supervisors compared to her previous office as Mayor of Encinitas. More and more, the Supervisors are responding to people needs and people concerns. She likened her experience in Rotary, finding ways to serve those in need… Her supervisor role is like that of Rotary.

The other difference in perspective is the size of her constituency as a Supervisor compared to that of a City Council member. The City of Encinitas is only a part of her supervisorial district which encompasses a total population of over 650,000 residents; similarly, the City budget was about $100 million, whereas the County budget is over $5 Billion…

Her hope is to engage more people in the process of providing services to those in need in her district. Engagement with the residents in serving others, along the lines of the Rotary model… “Service Above Self” will do more to help people in need in the County than adding many more programs and program dollars.

Supervisor Gaspar has an office in Escondido, and encourages all of us to engage with County programs.

Program:

Past President Mark Hoekstra introduced our speaker, Bill Schweitzer of the Ramona Valley Vineyard Association.

Bill shared with us about the growth of the ‘wine region’ in the Ramona, Escondido and Valley Center areas. In 2016 there were 18 locations in the association; both wineries and vineyards. In 2017, the Association has grown to 30 members.

Bill talked about the region and the qualities that affect grape growing and winemaking in the region; the altitude (early, intense sun), the soil (mineral rich and organically poor) the quality of the grapes and the wines (better each year), and the personal contact with winemakers.

The area has had a difficult struggle over the past 10 years, working with the County to ultimately create a ‘Tiered Winery Ordinance’ that enables wineries to begin producing and selling (at their wineries) the wines they create. This ordinance change has significantly reduced the cost of the winemaker to get from new vineyards to personally operated wineries… That ambience of the small, comfortable vineyards and wineries, enhances the wine tour benefit…

Local wineries in the Association have begin winning awards at various tasting competitions, which gives credibility to the region and it’s wines. Awards have been earned at the San Francisco Chronicle competition; the Toast of the Coast competition and the Sonoma Harvest wine competition.

All of this has combined to bring about growth in wine tourism in San Diego County, which is the second most popular tourist location in the world. The tourism draw along with the knowledgable wine consumers in San Diego County makes the Ramona Valley Vineyard Association a great growth opportunity for winegrowers and winemakers alike.

Program:

Past President Mark Hoekstra introduced our speaker (and his cousin); Ernie Hahn, President of AEG; Arena Entertainment Group, and General Manager of the Valley View Casino Center… or as some would call it, The San Diego Sports Arena…

Ernie shared some history of the 50 year-old facility and the various sports teams that have called it home, and major events that have taken place there. Of note was the 1979 NCAA Basketball Final Four, and various times with the Rockets (now Houston), the Clippers (now LA) and various hockey teams in a variety of leagues.

Ernie Hahn speaking to Escondido Sunrise Rotarians

The arena hosts 150 or more events each year, and in spite of its age, functions very well with numerous interior improvements that have been put in place over the years. Ernie used the example of exterior versus interior improvements; most of us are likely to agree that the arena looks like it did when it was new… Ernie’s comment was that return on investment is not affected positively at all, by the way of a venue’s exterior appearance. But, it functions now like an arena of the 21st century… And, the number of events staged there each year are a testimony to the quality of the venue to those who perform there. The arena is in the top five in the world in gross revenue for comparably sized venues.

Ernie also discussed the challenges in upgrading the facility; ranging from height limits on buildings west of I-5; a citizen’s initiative in San Diego that rarely sees a variance granted… And the Arena’s neighborhood (many strip malls, and lots of ‘strip’ businesses…). His comments reflect his perspective as a developer when he refers to the “CAVE” people always present in communities… “Citizens Against Virtually Everything.”

He spoke from a developer’s perspective about the challenges of land and project development; sharing his thoughts on development of big box stores and shopping malls and, now after several years of operation (e.g. Horton Plaza), being re-purposed. Having grown up in his father’s business, and with his grandfather’s (developer Ernest Hahn; North County Fair, Horton Plaza, and UTC among his major projects) influence.

August 17; The Alabaster Jar Project. Past President Tony Criss introduced our speaker, Susan Johnston. The efforts of the project focus on support against human trafficking and work with homeless and runaway girls. Susan share some statistics regarding the extent of the problem in San Diego County. Specifically, 80% of the victims are U.S. citizens; California is in the top 4 states in the country as to incidents of this activity and San Diego County has the 8th largest number of incidents in the country. it is estimated that human trafficking is an $800 million dollar industry in San Diego.

Susan described the kinds of situations that the trafficked girls find themselves in, and described the vulnerability characteristics that may cause victims to become victimized; including; abusive, unstable homes, lack of education and mental health and substance abuse issues…

The Alabaster Jar Project works closely with law enforcement and social workers to identify victims and rescue them from the abusive and human-trafficked settings. Their goal is to break the cycle that leads to the abuse. The project needs include housing support, educational enhancement, support for overcoming substance abuse and PTSD.

Last year the project supported 86 girls in Escondido and North County alone.

The Sunrise Rotary Club presented a check for $2,500 to support the program…

August 24: Club Assembly

The Club Assembly is the annual meeting during which the President and the Board present the Club’s plans for the year. A busy year of service lies ahead for Sunrise Rotarians…

Consider all the service opportunities discussed below and begin planning to join in…

Mexicali Project: Past President Rich Aeling spoke about the Mexicali Project; The project dates are yet to be finalized, however it will be in April. There are five possible schools in Mexicali that need our efforts; a scout trip will take place in December to determine the focus of our work effort.

Tijuana Housebuilding: This project will take place in early 2018; a partnership with the After Five Rotary Club and with the Calafia Rotary Club from Mexicali will help us complete this work along with Project Mercy.

RYLA: Past Presidents Jim Ponder and George Beitner described our work with RYLA which will take place April 19-22 in Idyllwild. There are many ways to connect with this very worthy leadership program; become a facilitator or just visit on Saturday.

Our club is a key operator with this program having three members on the District Team; Past Presidents, Jim Ponder, Kelly Mayberry and George Beitner…

Last year, we donated a rear-screen projector to the program to enhance the programs and activities.

LEAD: A leadership program for Middle School students; Past President Alan Miller and Elana Karoly are part of our team that works with this program

Bikes for Kids: Past President Rich Aeling discussed the program that we will sponsor again this year. Through the Bikes for Kids Foundation, we will acquire 120 bicycles for third grade students at an Escondido school yet to be chosen.

North County Veteran’s Stand-Down: President Dave outlined the program set for January 25-28 at Green Oaks Ranch in Vista. Volunteers are needed, and there will be a clothing drive to support this event and the homeless veterans.

Global Grants: Past President Jim Ponder informed the Club of the status of the grants for Flying Kites Orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya. A total of $37,000 is amalgamated through ESR Club funds, District Funds and the Rotary Foundation, plus a partnership with a Club in Nairobi.

CSUSM Scholarship Endowment: Past President Rich Aeling outlined the preliminary plans to create a student scholarship endowment at CSUSM. Our ultimate goal is an endowment of $25,000 to be seeded this year with $10,000 in ESR funds. Our goal is to be directly involved with evaluating and selecting recipients. It was suggested that we may also want to work with the MAP Program through the Escondido High School District and the Chamber of Commerce.

Cabins by the Lake: Past President Mike Dunlap outlined a plan this year to purchase and install two additional handicapped accessible cabins at a County Park.

These would be the twelfth and thirteenth units in our program that began back with a cabin at the Dixon Lake Campground.

Focus subjects supported by the Foundation include projects and programs within the following academic areas, Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics.

The foundation is run by volunteers with over 97% of all funds raised being used for educational enhancement projects. Grants are usually made in December, with projects beginning in January and reports back to the Foundation upon project completion in June. The Foundation website; escondidoeducation.org, enables direct donations, or individuals can also donate through purchases on Amazon and designating the Foundation on their Amazon Smile account. Last year’s grants totaled almost $70,000 to various projects within the district’s 23 schools.

A couple of examples of successful projects were described for the Club members; Rose School implemented a project involving the Rosetta Stone language achievement program in an effort to help families become more proficient in the English language… this project continues years after it first began, still helping families acclimate to life challenges in America. Another project is a video production program at Mission Middle School which has actually produced some commercials for local Escondido businesses; Burger Bench uses a video commercial produced by the students.

The foundation is conducting an ‘open house’ event to highlight this year’s projects and raise some funds too; August 11 at 6:30 PM at the Trinity Episcopal Church. All are welcome…

Program:

Past President George Beitner introduced SGT Ryan Opeka from the Carlsbad Police Department. Ryan, a US Marine Corps veteran has an extensive and varied career in law enforcement and his topic is the “cascading crime” situation in North County.

He spoke about recent legislation in California intended to reduce prison population; thus sending residents into our communities that are not ready for life back in a ‘normal’ setting.

Ryan related his comments to a TED Talk related to the re-introduction of wolves into Yellowstone Park. The eco-society had become accustomed to very few wolves and things had changed; as wolves were re-introduced, the eco system changed significantly. Likewise, communities and law enforcement in particular have had to change to deal with the influx of people with criminal backgrounds ‘re-populating’ our communities.

Ryan noted that in Carlsbad, calls for service had increased while officer-initiated calls had declined… simply stated, officers are busier responding to problems raised by community members than spending time resolving issues and initiating solutions through ‘active policing’. Along with the call volume noted above, the crime rate indices showed marked increases.

Some of the measures Carlsbad has implemented to deal with the influx of criminal activity include: A crime suppression team focusing on proactive policing, and a homeless outreach effort cooperating with other community organizations. Additionally, Carlsbad had increased training for officers in psychological response challenges, and have added a full time Psychological Emergency Response Team (PERT) professional to support officers as they deal with many criminal responses wherein substance abuse and other psychological issues are the root of the criminal problems.

Preliminary indications are the their efforts are slowing the growth of crime… He acknowledged that change takes time; however he shared with us the view that “small purposeful actions have a lasting impact.”

Program:

President Dave introduced Father Bill Dopp; Bill brought his program, “The Future of the Christian Faith” to us.

President Dave and Bill Dopp…

Bill shared that his presentation would not be a sermon… as his wife cautioned him to avoid; rather, he was talking about faith in general, specific to Christianity and the worldwide situation relating to the growth and decline of churches…

He acknowledged that 2017 is the 500th anniversary of the Reformation; initiated by Martin Luther, which changed the practice of faith and enabled the scriptures to be available to all believers. He also noted that there have been major changes in the practice of the Christian religion on a similar 500-year cycle. Thus, there are changes now taking place…

Bill has shared with the Club previously regarding his work in Uganda and the growth of Christianity in Africa. He commented that on Sundays in America, soccer fields are full and church attendance is declining; conversely, church growth is rapid in Africa, where church buildings are too small and worship festivities move to soccer fields. Quite a contrast.

Bill quoted a number of theologians and evangelists regarding the growth in the Christian faith towards a mission-based practice of faith and religion.  Such individuals as Dietrich Bonhoeffer, C.S. Lewis and Desmond Tutu supported his view. Bill has recently written a book which was available for members to purchase.

Bill is also working with a mission project in Uganda wherein water purification is an issue. Previously, Bill and Dave Herbert visited this ministry site in Uganda. The Club presented a gift donation of $1,500 in support of the project.

June 29: Wheel Chair Initiative

Mike and Pam Morasco presented a program on the uses of and need for wheelchairs in the Dominican Republic. As part of their church’s efforts to support needs in underdeveloped countries, they have taken on leadership of this project. Mike prefaced the comments about the need for wheelchairs by noting that motor scooters are a primary source of transportation in the Dominican, thus there are many accidents involving scooter riders… Thus the great need for wheelchairs…

They went on to describe the varying types of chairs needed based on the living conditions in the region; some urban areas with sidewalks, etc.; however many are needed for varied terrain in the outlying areas. Such wheelchairs need special wheels along with uniques aspects of construction for durability.

Their efforts involve both providing the wheelchair products, as well as teaching locals to assemble the chairs and maintain them.

In addition to the efforts of their church; there are possible partnerships with Rotary groups in Santo Domingo, the capitol city.

July 6: Past President Barry Baker introduced our program, Johnson Asiedu of the San Diego Football Academy

Johnson grew up in Ghana West Africa in extreme poverty; his football skills (soccer ability) ultimately led him to a professional football career in Europe. In addition to playing in worldwide competition, he completed his education and discovered that football can lead one on to greater things in life.

His soccer playing ultimately led to experience in coaching; thus his goal to provide hope, opportunity for education, and athletic leadership training for young men and women in San Diego county. His efforts also relate to helping young Ghanan students to come to America.

His current program goals are to bring 5 qualified Ghanan students to the US for soccer and education. Additionally, his plan is to improve educational opportunities as well as athletic programs in his native Ghana.

Total bond proceeds from the measure will be $182 m, planned to be used over 6 sequences of bond sales; current efforts are in Series A and B; providing significant facility improvements at two of the district’s oldest campuses, Central School and Mission Middle School. All campuses will receive some levels of improvement in Information technology infrastructure and school site safety.

Specifically under construction at Central currently is a Kindergarten building complex at the corner of Broadway and Fifth Avenue. Also under construction is a science building at Mission Middle School that is two levels, constructed through a modular design with sections built offsite and assembled in a single day’s work. Program:

Past President Jack Anderson introduced Elmer Heap, the North San Diego Division Manager for EDCO Disposal. Elmer was previously with the City of San Diego, as an attorney, and later as a Deputy Chief Operating Officer overseeing the Parks and Recreation and Environmental Services Departments. Jack also reminded the Club Members that Escondido Disposal Inc., part of EDCO Disposal has been a major sponsor of our Grape Day 5K since it’s beginning. EDCO was thanked with a rousing round of applause…

Elmer shared with us the quality of the employees that serve all of the communities that are served by EDCO in North County; Escondido, Poway, San Marcos, Vista, Encinitas and Solana Beach. He is continually impressed with the quality service and longevity of the company’s employees. And he reminded us that all employees of the company are the ‘Face of the Company’ to the communities they serve.

He spoke about EDCO having been in business since 1967, beginning with the City of La Mesa, and that today has franchise agreements with 11 of the 18 Cities in San Diego County. He then described the varied California legislative mandates that were adopted by the Legislature beginning 1989, requiring communities to reduce their volume of waste placed in landfills. With those legislative mandates, EDCO has responded to support it’s city services by providing transfer station services in Escondido and separation and sale of recycled materials.

Elmer concluded his presentation with a digital, visual ‘flyover’ of the upgraded recycling facility in Escondido that will celebrate it’s grand opening on June 30. The facility will accommodate an increased volume of recycled materials processing from 22 tons/hour to 40-60 tons/hour. Added to the facility, and opening in about 18 months, will be an Anaerobic Digester to accommodate both green waste and food waste. The by-product of the Digester will be production of Compressed Natural Gas which will fuel the collection vehicles serving all of our communities. This is the first facility of its kind in the State, wherein all processing of waste, including the production of CNG is essentially under a single roof… With the CNG being used to fuel vehicles in the operations yard immediately across the street from the processing plant.

Her hope is that Alzheimer’s research can improve the opportunities for those afflicted through medicines that will stem the progressive nature of the disease. San Diego County, with so much medical research, leads the fight worldwide. She stated that women are  often afflicted more than men; she also stated that a ‘heart-healthy’ lifestyle (quality diet and exercise) can be a great deterrent to Alzheimer’s.

Jim has known Alex for several years, and he is a featured guest at RYLA programs at which he is always a wonderful inspiration for the young people attending.

Alex began his story of his very early life in Medellin Columbia; born as a triple amputee (no arms and only one leg) due to his mother’s use of the drug Thalidomide. Alex’s parent’s perspective of his condition was that he should be encouraged and supported to do all that he could possibly do in life; contrary to the medical professionals who suggested to his parents, “that his life would not amount to much of anything.”

Alex Montoya speaking to Club members and guests…

With family in the US, Alex’s parents arranged for him to come to America for treatment in a Shriner’s hospital. That amazing care, plus the attitude that he could accomplish anything he put his mind to, has led him to a life of caring for and inspiring others. His older sister encouraged him as he was preparing to leave Columbia for the US by telling him that he “was on a mission,” and encouraging him to “make a difference.”

Alex was ‘equipped’ with appropriate prothetic devices and began his quest to accomplish ‘What If’… That attitude has propelled him to a degree from Notre Dame, a community relations post with the Padres, and many opportunities to impact thousands of people with life experiences and his uncanny ability to connect with his audiences. Alex reminded us to enjoy life while focusing on what we have and not on what we are missing… His advice, “never take for granted those things in life that we can do each moment without having to think about them” is solid counsel for all of us.

Alex encourages us to surround ourselves with supportive people and always to be a cheerleader for others. To this end, he has begun the ‘See the Good’ movement, an opportunity for him to reach others with the perspectives and reality that has enabled him to actively contribute to our world.

 Program:

Past President Barry Baker introduced Monte Giles as our speaker.

Monte works in international market development for Qualcomm and characterizes himself as a tech geek who loves working with people. He talked about the exponential growth of smart phone usage, and using a theme of Qualcomm’s, “we live to connect.”

He shared another perspective of Qualcomm’s theme; “We don’t make devices, we make connections.”

He recently returned from a trip to China, and commented that China Mobile, the country’s smart phone provider, has 835 million subscribers in a country with a population of 1.2 billion people.

He discussed some of the technical aspects of electronic communications, including band width and the value of network in enabling smart phones to connect. In the next 30 years, smart phone technology will be connecting people to things, and devices will act on our behalf. An example of this is the driverless car.

Technology capability is growing; many of us have used devices with 2G, 3G or now, 4G  power; the next breakthrough will be 5G…

He showed us a chip that will equal the capacity of 3 billion transistors on a chip the size of a fingernail…

See this chip…

The economic potential of these small, powerful computers in our hand-held devices is expected to generate 22 million jobs worldwide. Monte completed his presentation by answering questions from some of the more brilliant techno-geeks from within the Club membership….

 Program:

Chris Miller introduced Dennis Astil, the Manager of Construction and Facilities Planning for Palomar College. Dennis talked about the variety of projects being built on the various Palomar campuses and the methodologies used on the projects,

The projects are all supported through the proceeds of the $694 M bond measure passed by the voters in 2006. The key element of all the projects is smart management and attention to budget detail.

Dennis highlighted the latest project, a facilities and maintenance center that will provide a single location for warehousing, facilities operations and maintenance services on the main campus. Utilizing an odd-shaped, highly visible piece of property at the entrance to the college, they used a design-build with competition process. Attempting to achieve the ‘best value’ in the project, while maintaining some design control. Concerns were a limited budget of $15.5 M, while building an aesthetically pleasing facility which would also be durable and energy efficient. They are proud to have achieved all of the criteria set by the Board and within budget constraints… Dennis will be making a similar presentation to an upcoming gathering of architects and construction managers…

Kiana has worked in hospitality affiliation with Military installations; her most recent assignment before the Camp Pendleton Fisher House as the Manager of the “Inns of the Corps” at MCAS Miramar.

Kiana spoke about the need for distant family support at Camp Pendleton when a Marine is undergoing hospitalization; this need can be magnified by the fact that over 40,000 Marines are attached to and deployed from Camp Pendleton. With most of them from places other than San Diego, the need for family support accommodations becomes even greater. She shared a story of a severely injured Marine whose family was in New York; they needed to make an emergency trip to support their Marine, and their case manager facilitated the connection with Fisher House as a support base for the Marine’s family.

Kiana shared the need is even magnified more when one considers the average cost of hotel stays in San Diego is $140.00 per night; unusually high when many families’ means are insufficient for such costs, and there may be an extended stay depending on treatment needs. ‘Loved ones’ of a military member (active duty or veteran) receiving care are eligible to use the facility; the families of veterans or military members   receiving care in civilian hospitals are also eligible to use the Fisher House if space permits. Families that use the Fisher House facility are not charged for their lodging; the donations we make, as do many other philanthropic groups, are used by the guests during their stays. Since opening in 2015, the Camp Pendleton facility has served over 300 families.

Kiana shared further that there are 71 Fisher House facilities throughout the US located at military and VA medical facilities; there are five facilities at Navy and Marine Corps facilities across the country, the first being at Bethesda Maryland, serving both Bethesda and the Walter Reed Army hospital.

Fisher House facilities are donated to the military by the Fisher Foundation, and operations are the responsibility of the various medical facilities; Navy, Army, Air Force and Veterans Administration.

 Program:

Brian Murphy introduced today’s program; our own Past President Bob Burson disclosing all of his fiction-writing secrets…

Bob, appropriately so, introduced his ‘silent partner’ in his fiction-writing second career, his bride, Rosemary…

Rosemary is his editor, marketing guru and chief whip-cracker in keeping him on task…

Bob described for us the difference between a CPA (his former profession) and that of a writer… Basically detailing the left-brain, right-brain challenges he faces in his new endeavors.

He outlined the creative, story-telling side of his efforts, and shared that as such he is much more evocative and active as he speaks… In another words, he uses his hands a whole lot more than a CPA would ever do…

Bob expressing himself with his hands, and not like his former analytical, accountant self…

Bob discussed the writing process he uses, and the ways in which he constructs his stories. He also lamented all of the important things to a fledgling writer that he ignored in his college English classes… Thinks like spelling, vocabulary, sentence structure and storytelling…

He is also learning the ‘ins and outs’ of marketing, social media, reviews and speaking engagements. One of his more recent endeavors was to enhance his search engine optimization so that his books appear early on in readers’ searches of the internet for certain types of books.

Regarding his interests as an author, Bob likes to create action-adventure stories with a geo-political influence. His work is a blend of works in the Nelson DeMille style along with some Tom Clancy influence.

Bob has been fairly prolific in his production, having published books in 2007, ’09, 2010, ’11, and ’13… His current work is a two-volume piece…

Bob was very appreciative of the work of his ‘partner’ in this effort, Rosemary. Her experience with social media and writing in general has helped him along the way… Bob’s books can be found at rtburson.com and are available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Past President Bob and Rosemary Burson with President Tony…

Tom led us on a virtual four-day tour of the San Juan Islands in the gulf of Juan de Fuca. The proximity of the islands (less than 10 miles to the first marina at Orcas Island from Anacortes), the rather ‘gentle’ weather, and the beauty of the islands and all they offer. Tom spoke about the significant tidal changes in the sound and the gulf, and their impact on sailing and boating. He referred to the Waggoner Cruising Guide, the ‘bible’ for water sport activity in the San Juan chain. His beautiful slides, and interesting comments on the various marinas and hotels that one will encounter throughout the course of touring. Included in the visual tour were photos of Orca whale pods and wildlife on the islands, including numerous pictures of the great bald eagles inhabiting the area. In addition to boating, there is access by sea plane and ferries to some islands. Not only will one see great views and experience the calmness of island travel, the food is amazing as one has the opportunity to binge on Dungeness crab and other great seafood. Tom share with us the vacation packages offered through his Boating School where travelers have the opportunity to participate as a crew member while enjoying the beautiful scenery. Jim introduced his wife Cynthia, commenting that she was a key support of his law enforcement career. Jim also commented that their two sons, Brandon and Brett are officers with the Escondido Police Department.

Retired Police LT Jim Byler sharing with our Club members:

Jim shared statistics about Officer Involved Shootings (the title of his book, “O.I.S. After the Trigger’s Pulled) and discussed the technology that officers now use in the form of body cameras and their impact on law enforcement and officers’ actions and reactions in situations where deadly force is use. He also showed a footage of a on-the-scene newscast in Baltimore where an ‘eye witness’ recounted a story involving an officer and a suspect that was completely untrue based on the facts of the situation.

Jim also shared the amazing coincidental fact that he and both his sons had been involved in shootings; Jim while serving in Carlsbad, Brandon while serving in Escondido, and Brett while a member of the San Diego PD. Jim also showed a surveillance camera image of the incident during which Brett was required to use lethal force.

Jim shared from all three of their experiences about the emotional demands on an officer in making split-second decisions regarding use of lethal force; and then the emotional aftermath of those incidents while officers await findings of the District Attorney, and in certain cases, then face legal action by suspects and their surviving family members.

Many questions were discussed after his presentation, and Club members expressed their appreciation for and support for the challenges faced by our community’s law enforcement professionals.

Highlighted in the video more than once was footage from our Grape Day 5K event, showing crowds of people having a wonderful time in Downtown Escondido. Jim commented that Berg Electric, a signature sponsor, is back with us for next year. He also commented that Palomar Health Foundation is possibly interested in becoming a partner in our event. Jim expressed very clearly, that any relationship with any potential partner will be on our terms… Escondido Sunrise has continued to build our Grape Day 5K event and it’s growth potential is amazing… Even without ‘new partners.’

Past President Jim also commented on his attendance at the annual meeting/gala of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in New York. Escondido Sunrise Rotary was recognized as Society’s Outstanding Philanthropic Partner of the Year!

What great kudos for our efforts through our Grape Day 5K Event… Congratulations to the entire Club!

Barry commented that Jay learned a great deal about leadership while serving with McMaster and has great respect for him.

Program:

Past President Jack Anderson presented the days program; various ‘Who Am I’ presentations from newer members of Escondido Sunrise Rotary.

Bob Portillo shared his background as a native of El Paso, TX, and his excitement in leaving there to attend dental school. As a young dentist, he began an ‘internship’ with the US Air Force that lasted over 25 years. Bob and his wife enjoyed their various duty assignments including the opportunities to travel; having visited over 26 countries. Bob established a dental practice in Escondido, and fortunately for us, he is next-door neighbor to our member, Ralph Tavares. Bob had a brief membership in the Escondido Rotary Club, and with Ralph’s encouragement, joined the best Rotary Club in Escondido! Glad to have you as a member, Bob!

Bob Portillo sharing his story with the Club:

Joe Holtz, a former member of the Escondido West Rotary Club is back as a member of Escondido Sunrise Rotary. Joe’s hiatus from our club occurred because of our change to a breakfast club format and the impact on his patient schedule with his dental practice. Joe shared that he established his practice in Escondido in 1980 and enjoyed a successful career; now really enjoying retirement!

Joe and his wife Geni have four children, many of whom have extended relationships with Rotary and its international connections. His oldest son Jarod was a RYLA attendee, and participated in a Rotary Youth Exchange in Indonesia; Jarod also received a Rotary Foundation Scholarship and obtained a Masters Degree in International Business while studying in Ghana West Africa. Jarod has shared his experiences with our Club in the past. Joe’s daughter Joanna, is a veterinarian in Middletown, CA and presented to us last fall about the Valley Fire in Lake County, and the recovery effort through local Rotary Clubs that our Club supported with over $2,000 in gifts. Joanna is also a RYLA graduate and a member of the Middletown Rotary Club. Joe and Geni’s other two children are Nick, a mechanical engineer, who also participated in a Rotary Youth Exchange in Denmark and Amanda, a communications and marketing professional.

Joe and Geni are proud grandparents of Penelope; a 10 month-old bundle of joy…

Joe Holtz sharing his story with the Club:

Bill Dopp shared his experience and life ‘stories’ with us. Bill was previously a member of Escondido Sunrise, however was gone about 18 months involved in some professional growth opportunities and some health challenges.

Bill began his story talking about the number of ‘Bills” in his family. Among his great grandfather, grandfather, father and now his son, there are many “Bills” in the Dopp family tree. Bill commented that in his college fraternity at Indiana University, there were three “Bills” in his pledge class, so he was “Will”… A name his wife still uses today.

Bill began his working life as a journalist with the Wall Street Journal, but soon discovered his real calling as an Episcopal Priest. After a long period of serving various congregations throughout the country, Bill returned to San Diego. He teaches at Bethel Seminary in San Diego and has found a place among the Baptists and the Lutherans in Escondido. Bill recently experienced a great trip to the Holy Land where he lead a service at the Church of the Annunciation in Bethlehem and baptized some believers in the Jordan River. While away from our Club, Bill also underwent cancer treatment for prostate cancer, and wrote a book entitled, “Is There Hope for the Christian Faith?”

Part of the discussion, and President-Elect Dave engaged all of the Club members is the focus on growing our membership. A key item is bringing younger members into the Club. Guest, Justin McDonald shared his thoughts on reaching millennials…

His comments related to goals young people have are to ‘do’ projects and not just write checks. Escondido Sunrise is proud of our engagement with projects… The key is to publicize our ‘doing’ as we reach out to potential members.

There will be more to come as this year moves forward and Dave’s year begins in July.

Program:

Today’s program was focused on the site of our meeting, Del Lago Academy, a public high school campus of the Escondido Union High School District. Keith Nuthall, Principal, described the academic program at the school, discussing the integrated curriculum that links academic disciplines with practical applications. He referred often to the relationships built between the ‘scholars’ and the teachers, enabling the scholars to prepare for ‘Life, Career and College.’

Part of our participation with the school and the scholars is our support for the ‘Solar Cup Project’… Two scholars, Sean and Jacob explained the program and the competition related to the ‘Cup.’ Among 40 school teams in southern California, the teams are all provided with a basic hull, about 15 long, in which they design and build a solar powered propulsion system for their craft. Competition for the ‘Cup’ takes place at Lake Skinner, and involves both endurance and sprint events. The competition is conducted by the Metropolitan Water District and in addition to the competitive side, the students learn about the State’s water resource management issues.

Escondido Sunrise Rotary supports the Solar Cup project with financial contributions; President Tony presented our check and is pictured with Principal Nuthall, Liz LaBlond, and scholars Sean, Jacob, Haley and Alana…

After the discussion on the school and the project, a number of scholars led us on tours of the campus.

We had the chance to view the Solar Cup craft under construction. Pictured with tour guides Sandra and Jasmine, are Alan Miller, Lorraine Paige, Rich Aeling and Mike Muehl

Sunrise Rotary February 2, 2017

Remember:     This week’s meeting at Del Lago Academy; 7:00 AM,                 The address is 1740 Scenic Trail Way, Escondido,                 (near Citracado Pkwy and West Valley Pkwy). Meet in                 the school parking lot at 7:00 AM.

Past President George Beitner led the Pledge of Allegiance

Bill Dopp offered an invocation.

President Tony graciously handed the gavel to President-Elect Dave Casey to enable him to gain some ‘hands on experience’ conducting a meeting…

Well, the Past President’s Council thought this might have been a ‘set up’… As soon as Dave ‘captured’ the lectern, the speaker, Sean Carlson, BAILED…

He apologized while claiming that our visual set up was not going to work with his presentation on technical education… What irony!! A speaker on tech education cannot give his presentation without tech support… First time ever for our fine weekly programs…

Dave handled all with great aplomb (that’s a big word for all of us!!) and the meeting proceeded smoothly…

Good job Dave; and always beware of Presidents bearing gifts…

President-Elect Dave looked very presidential at the lectern with that dastardly gavel in his hand…

Guest and Visitors:

Former member, Bill Dopp was introduced… Rumor has it that he will be re-joining soon.

Dates to Remember:

February    9:        Club meeting and breakfast at Del Lago Academy

The school will be providing breakfast, a tour of the                     school, and a presentation on the Solar Cup Project that                 ESR is helping to fund with a $1000 donation.  The                     address is 1740 Scenic Trail Way, Escondido, 92029                     (near Citracado Pkwy and West Valley Pkwy). Meet in the                 school parking lot at 7:00 AM.

        14:        Valentine’s Day… Don’t forget!!

        20-23:        Mexicali Project

October    7:        Grape Day 5K; only 247 days till the big event!

High Fives and Announcements:

Dave Casey offered a huge ‘High Five’ to all the restaurants and groups that made donations to support the Veteran’s Stand-down; of note were several fast-food and barbecue restaurants that donated huge amounts of food and Dr. Bronner’s Soap offering hygiene supplies for all the veterans.

Programs and Events at Recent Meetings:

Without a formal program, comments were made on the great ‘project’ weekend that took place January 27-29…

Tijuana House-Build:

Rich Aeling and Barry Baker shared photos and tidbits about the great work that was accomplished for a grandmother and her three children. Also participating were members of the After Five Rotary Club and the Calafia Club. The most exciting part of the project; other than building a much needed house… Was the ‘muddy’ access to the project. Trucks were literally ‘mired’ in the mud; Barry’s truck, Mark & Glynna Hoekstra’s truck, and a church bus from another project team… Seems the only truck to make it safely to the house site was Mike O’Malley’s… Must be something about the ‘Luck O’ the Irish’….

So, in addition to building a house, several vehicles were rescued from axle-deep mud. Alan Miller’s ‘Little Car that Could’ was a key in pulling some of the ‘big boy trucks’ out of the slop…

North County Veteran’s Stand-Down:

President-Elect Dave shared some highlights of the weekend at Green Oak Ranch in Vista, where nearly 130 veterans received a wide range of services including, clothing, personal hygiene support, legal services and referrals for additional services. Legal support was provided through and onsite session of ‘Homeless Court’ with Judge Kirkland on the site, clearing cases for the veterans.

All-in-all, hundreds of volunteers served the men and women that have served our nation. Escondido Sunrise Rotary was one of the donors for the event and was appropriately recognized.

The success of the event and the on-going need will result in this service being offered again next year.

January 26 Program; San Diego Padres:

Curt Waugh, Director of Group Tickets and Hospitality for the Padres presented our program. He was accompanied by Sean Nickelsen, a member of the Group Sales staff.

Curt talked about the upcoming season and personnel changes the team is making. Notably is the new contract for Will Myers, the home run-hitting All Star first baseman that was just signed to a new multi-year contract. He emphasized the team’s goals as they relate to the San Diego community with a focus on Living, Learning, Playing and Serving.

We reminded Curt of the great benefit the Padres and Major League Baseball provided to the Escondido Community with the installation of the new ball field complex at the Boys and Girls Club facility on Woodward and Broadway.

Programs and Events at Recent Meetings:

January 19 Program: Brian Murphy and Wood and Furniture Show VIII at the Escondido Municipal Gallery

Brian discussed the show that opened last weekend and continues through February 4.  He showed photos of the beautiful work among 30 craftsmen and their entries.

Awards included: Best of Show, Bob Stevenson and his Federal Secretary in Cuban  mahogany. Best in Craftsmanship, Craig Thibodeau. Best Design, Justin Yasboor. And, Best in Finish, Brian Carnett.

All of the pieces were spectacular with four finishing places awarded beyond the ‘Best’ finisher in all four categories. Our Club supported the event and was recognized for our sponsorship. Brian commented that the opening drew over 500 guests and the Arts Partnership is concerned that the venue is becoming too small for the great participation.

A summary of recent programs follows:

On August 4, City Manager Graham Mitchell was presented as our speaker by John Masson. Graham has been City Manager since January, and with the City since July of 2015. He spoke about priorities for the City and the City Council’s efforts to facilitate economic growth though streamlined permit and application processes.

Graham also spoke about his and staff member efforts to re-evaluate the way business is done in the City to improve customer service and cost efficiencies. He also spoke about our water treatment efforts to increase the amount of reclaimed water available to customer use.

Graham Mitchell with President Tony:

On August 11, our speaker was Joi Lin Blake, the new Superintendent/President of Palomar College. She was introduced by John Masson, an active member in the Palomar College Foundation.

Dr. Blake spoke about her experience with community colleges throughout California, and the level of new construction being accomplished to strengthen Palomar’s programs.

She discussed the strategic focus of the College and its Board of Trustees including: Access, Affordability, Achievement, Accountability, K-16 Partnerships, Workforce Training and Economic Opportunity.

During her presentation, the computer display wasn't advancing properly and she received some timely help from President Tony.

Tony, the ‘IT’ guy

Palomar President Joi Lin Blake with John Masson and President Tony:

On August 18, our speakers represented the Pacific South Coast Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Association. The program was introduced by Jim Ponder and he welcomed Rich Israel, the Executive Director of the Chapter, and Mark Mahigian, a local volunteer and an MS sufferer.

Rich thanked the Club for our support of the MS chapter and briefly discussed the ways in which our support is of great benefit to those afflicted with MS. Mark described how he first experienced symptoms of the disease while working for the NY Attorney General’s Office. Ultimately, he and his family made a decision to leave New York because of the impact of varied climate conditions on those with MS; particularly extremes of heat and cold. While searching for a new area to relocate, a major part of the decision process was to find excellent MS support organizations. The Pacific South Coast Chapter offered such support, prompting their relocation to San Diego County… Naturally, the climate here had much to do with their move as well. Mark described in greater detail the ways the Chapter assisted those afflicted with MS, and how he became involved as a volunteer.

K9 Guardians trains dogs to support veterans with PTSD. Leisa stated that an average of 22 veterans take their own lives each day. Much of their distress can be alleviated through the help of these highly trained K9s. The veterans are able to both receive support from their animals as well as gain a focus outside of their problems because they have to provide care, training and support for their dogs.

K9 Guardians has raised over 100 pups, placing them with deserving veterans. The cost for training and raising a pup ranges between $15,000 to $50,000 per animal depending on time and training needs. Costs support training, food, veterinarian care and the like. The organization’s goal next year is to raise and completely train 22 dogs. A 501 (c)3 not-for-profit organization, donations are always welcomed. Donations can be made via their website, k9guardians.org. Volunteers can also help with puppy raising, becoming a dog sponsor and supporting the group through Amazon Smile.

Mike O’Malley was in St. Louis for a Navy reunion and brought Tony a memento from the Budweiser Brewery; amazingly it was still full after the adventurous plane trip Mike enjoyed on his flight home…

Program:

Tony has started the year off with a “hollow bang” as there was no speaker present…

It was supposed to be Dan McAllister, the San Diego County Tax man. He arrived at about 8:00, just as we were wrapping up. Talk to Brian Murphy…

So, improvising in fine fashion, Tony asked Mike O’Malley to ad lib a speech about his trip. Mike took the lectern by storm and described his hair-raising flight home from St. Louis. The plane blew a tire on takeoff from Denver, so they did a low-level fly-by so the tower could eye-ball the tire’s condition. After that, the opportunity to burn some excess fuel boring holes in the sky around Denver International until they could attempt a ‘controlled’ crash landing. Well, Mike made it home and could laugh about the whole experience.

Dan McAllister arrived and spoke for a few gratuitous minutes on the issues tax collectors face, such as: paper vs. electronic bills and the 99% collection rate for property taxes in the County.

Post Polio Syndrome is an affliction that impacts polio survivors as they advance in age.

Rick works with about 600 Post Polio Syndrome individuals in San Diego and Orange Counties; whose needs vary with support needs of equipment and home improvements to enable them to function in spite of their paralysis.

Rick described the symptoms experienced by these individuals, many of which require special medical support. In his own case, he has special needs relative to anesthesia if he much undergo surgery. In his situation, even with guidance from his doc, the anesthesiologist working on his case ignored  the guidance and Rick required several hours to recover from his anesthesia.

Rick commended Rotary for its efforts to eradicate polio however, he stated that 50 plus years after the last case is contracted, there will still be needs for the patient in their Post Polio years.

Program:
Toran Gaal, Marine Corps Hero visited us to discuss his bicycle trip across the nation. Bob Benton introduced Toran by showing a video ‘Warriors Among Us”; watch it on Vimeo.
Toran’s trip was 63 days long as he traveled 4,067 miles in 57 cities; his longest day was 213 miles, his shortest was 32 miles.
His efforts raised $50,000 for the Semper Fi Fund; a great support for wounded heroes.
Toran reminded us that “Kansas is not as flat as you think it is.” He talked about the hardest miles were over the Rocky Mountains as he reached 14,000 feet in rain and cold. His best day was as he entered Marshfield, Missouri around July 4th and a special parade was staged in his honor. Police and Firefighters from all over the county and the state escorted him into town and welcomed him…
His second best day was in Boston, where he had a police escort throughout the entire city; he in August in Annapolis, Maryland.
He appreciated all of the law enforcement and veteran support that he encountered throughout his trip. His wife Lisa, who coordinated all of the arrangements, commented that one of the greatest feelings he experienced was connecting with the veterans in small towns across the country. Most of these heroes don’t have the veteran’s services readily available as we do in San Diego. These men and women long for contact with others that have shared the experiences of war; Lisa commented that this was an unexpected blessing of the trip… Shown below are Toran and Lisa Gaal and Deputy Chief Bob Benton

As the meeting closed, President Rich announced that John Boyce became a grandfather again the morning of December 3… Congratulations John and Donna!!

Program:
Tony Criss introduced our speaker, Phillip Jordan. Phillip is the Business Development Manager of WRESY Water Recycling… Happens to be Tony’s company, but President Rich was not about to fine Tony for the long commercial Phillip was ready to present to the Club…
Phillip talked about the drought facing California and the different ways homeowners and businesses can capture water from both rain and irrigation to reuse on their property.  Phillip shared a number of statistics relating to water usage, and water wasting.  He also commented on the 25% water use reduction demanded by the State of California because of the drought. And, it always seems that when ratepayers reduce their usage, the agencies raise rates to maintain systems and infrastructure.
The WRESY system captures water on a property and pumps it back into the irrigation system for re-use. Drainage on a property is reconfigured to capture runoff and tanks are buried at catchment points to be pumped back into the irrigation system. Sensors gauge when watering is needed, and also monitor tank capacity to begin re-using water when the tanks reach capacity. The system is designed to catch irrigation runoff and rain water; it cannot be used for gray water as that is a violation of State health codes. New housing projects (KB Homes in particular) are using a similar Australian system in their construction planning so that recycling can be integrated into the property maintenance system. Typical cost of a system is about $4,000.

Doug shared about his career as a financial advisor now in an independent practice, using a holistic, client-focused approach to helping his clients. Beth is a volunteer and started a Youthful Endeavors program a few years ago and previously shared it with us. An addition to the program serving youth from the congregation and the neighborhood is the musical program lead by two additional volunteers from the church. The program enables music to enrich the first-eighth graders' creativity. Beth and her team applied for a grant to purchase Orff musical instruments; basically xylophones with varying tonal differences.  They are so easy to learn, that Beth obtained a volunteer from our meeting and taught him to play!! Past President Mark learned a few bars of 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' and actually was part of getting our members to sing a few notes of the ditty...
Great job Beth; way to go Mark!!

Once again these youth and their speeches never cease to amaze.  We were treated today with two youth from the Classical academy.  More about them later.  They were joined by their Speech and Debate Teacher, Jonathon Sonada.  Each student had a parent present to support them, Lori Hall and Nat White were our guests.

Speaker #1—anonymous, except that with two students, one male and one female—we figured it out pretty quick!

Carole Hall—a Freshman at Classical academy in her first year of speech and debate shared her speech that dealt with the topic of Facebook, loneliness, mentoring and suicide.  Carole is a bit unsure but is interested in Computer science or bio science right now.  She is taking a psychology class which is what led her to her topic.
                                               MENTORING
On 14 February 2014, just a few short weeks ago, on a day for lovers, a 15 year old jumped from the 27th floor of a building to her death.  This girl felt that posting on Facebook had cost her reputation, and she could not face anyone anymore!
What might have changed this sad event?  Mentoring perhaps.  Mentoring is defined as educating someone with less experience, who needs advice or acts as a parent sibling in their absence.
Mentors make people feel worthwhile of educating and sharing their time.  Youth try harder and succeed more if they know someone cares about them.  These youth are 52% less likely to skip class or cut school.  They are 46% less likely to get into drugs or drinking.
The 4 way test does fit a mentoring style—it is truth, it is beneficial for all, it does create  good will and better friendships and it is beneficial for all involved—especially the 15 year old girl who took her life.

Speaker #2

Brian White—is a junior at Classical Academy and this is his second year in Speech & Debate.  He plays baseball and hopes to possibly get into law or seminary.  There was a comment that these may not mix.  Brian did a mission trip to Albania, which gave him his passion for the speech and seeing the difference that missionaries make in the lives of the people they preach to.

                                                                                CHRISTIANITY
There was a Preacher who had been kidnapped by the underground.  They wanted to break him to find out very crucial information.  First they beat him, he would not talk, then they threw him in a cellar full of very hungry rats—he could not sleep for two days, yet he still would not give them any information.  Finally they took him to a room where his son had been captured and he was willing to talk.  But his son intervened and said no to his father.  His son stated he was better off in the next world then in this one if they turned.  What force is it that convinced this son to be so brave?  What was stronger than his own survival?
Christianity!
The gospels tell us that Christianity guarantees eternal life to everyone who believes.  It preaches Christianity is the way. The truth and the life.
Yet the gospel also cause controversy, such as the story of the vineyard, many people worked, some starting later in the day, yet at the end of the day they all got paid the same.  This is likened to Christianity.  Some follow their entire life, is it fair that the person who redeems in his last days get the same benefits?
Recently there is a lot of talk of Christianity and the negative hateful aspects people call Christianity.  One must look at what the Lord gave as the second most important command, to love all men, your neighbor as yourself.  To love, not hate, not judge, not condemn!

There was a Preacher at LAX hearing someone speaking of the Christianity of fire and brimstone, and he stopped the person.  He compared to a shoe salesman---if a salesman was yelling at you to buy shoes—would you buy them.  No –you have to display your Christianity like shoes and let people browse and select for themselves.
Christianity is the truth as substantiated by archeological digs, artifacts etc.  It is beneficial to all, as it keep s people from drugs, and turns their lives around.  It does create good will to men!

What a great honor.  At Thursday’s meeting, the membership had the honor to vote for four new members, all part of the Teri organization, our first corporate membership.  A huge thank you to Mike Dunlap who has had a relationship with Teri for a few years through our cabin donation, but that he brought this to fruition with 4 new members is amazing.
A huge welcome to Teri and the following members:

Michelle Spacciapolli
Phillip Sammuli
Kimmy Roberts
Greg Snaer

Just to refresh your memories—the below is the guidelines for Corporate Membership:

ESR Proposed Corporate Membership:
  • Allows for multiple members from the same company.
  • Full cost for Primary Member.
  • Only the Primary Member can be eligible for a club officer positions (President, President-Elect, Treasurer, Secretary, Sergeant-at-Arms).
  • Reduced Costs for additional members (up to 3 max):
  1. RI Dues – $6
  2. District Dues – $3
  3. Club Dues – Optional
  4. Paul Harris – $11
  5. Weekly Meal – Billed only if present
  6. Monthly recognition (fines) – Optional
Total proposed amount to be billed - $20/month.

President’s note:
I have added the $11 per month Paul Harris amount.  This will continue to allow us to state that we are an EREY club and that all of our members are on either on tract to become Paul Harris Fellows or have already reached that status.  This differentiates us from most other clubs in our district and throughout Rotary International.

Things do not always turn out as we plan, but better then we imagined! That is the case with Gloria Lefler’s high five today. When Charlie and Gloria built their house, and then remodeled it, they had the idea they would live there forever.  And they did live there for many years and have many happy memories.
But health gets the best of each of us sometimes, and Charlie’s has been deteriorating.  This caused them to be unable to keep up with the magnificent orchard in the back yard.  Gloria thanked the Rotarians who came for a few weeks to get the yard manageable to allow them to put the house on the market.

The house has sold, and it is a blessing.  Gloria and Charlie have found a house that is wheel chair accessible for future concerns, as well as has a walk in master shower and laundry in the house.  They will be moving in 1 March 2014, with their daughter to move in in April to help out!  Gloria is very happy for the decreased work load in upkeep, as well as the convenience it will offer for Charlie and his disabilities.
Thank you to all who helped make this happy ending happen!

Rorie Johnson President/CEO of Escondido Chamber of commerce was hired by our own Brian Murphy, and Les Abshire mentored her to assume her current responsibilities on 1 January 2014.

Married 22 years, she and her husband have spent only 2 valentines together.  She has a dog, Abigail and not having children of her own, she joked about adopting an 18 year old to take care of them in their older years.  This sort of happened when Kristine, now 20 came to live with them at 18.  Kristen is Rory’s niece

Escondido celebrated 125 years as a city.  Chamber is 127 old as it started as an association before it reached city status.

Chamber of Commerce’ mission is to promote and attract commerce to the city.  The first Chamber of Commerce was established in 1601 in Paris; the first in the United States was in 1768 in New York City, where every business in the city must be in the Chamber.  Rorie liked this idea for Escondido, but!!!

Escondido Chamber association started in the Sun Kist  Business office, then went to its own building on Grand & Maple, then to Escondido and Fifth.  In 1960 it moved to its current location on Broadway—but the building looked much different.

There are many levels of Chamber of Commerce, Local level regional, global level, international chamber of commerce.  There is also the Jaycees, or junior chamber of commerce.

Rorie is a member of the Escondido Tuesday rotary club. (of course someone was quick to say they thought she was too young to join that club.

The Education committee focuses on K through life to Engage the city’s future work force.

CSUSM senior group is working on expanding involvement in the   May 18 th spring festival, and they need volunteers.  Looking for ways to marry nonprofit and businesses to benefit each other.

A Weekly newsletter is available to anyone wishing to be placed on the email list.  Contact the Chamber to request this.

The Quarterly magazine is distributed throughout the city and paid for by ads in the magazine.  They have various outreaches, one is a Good morning Escondido monthly breakfast 28 February, as well as various Ribbon cutting events, workshops, and presentations.

For those who showed up to the meeting thinking Club Runner was about the Gaslamp, sorry!  For those who brought your laptop and got so confused, you asked Rich to add you, also sorry!  For those who are still willing to fight the idiosyncrisies of Club Runner--you deserve a medal.

Hopefully most of us have a picture up and show our club has a human face, and are welcoming to new members and technology.

That said, I have been struggling myself with this new bulletin program.  Bear with me, as I suspect we will  be learning and evolving together.  wink
