Program:

The Education Compact was our featured program. Diversion Program Director, MaryAnne Dijak presented on behalf of Compact.

MaryAnne Dijak presenting to Sunrise Rotary members about the Juvenile Diversion Program, a partnership with Compact, the Escondido Police Department and families of youth arrested for misdemeanor crimes in Escondido.

MaryAnne described the Diversion Program as an alternative to the Justice System, and the Escondido program includes Youth Court, Drug Court, and is in place with the Police Department and both School Districts.

The above slide describes the various elements of the program. Of focus is holding the youth accountable with a variety of responsibilities to successfully complete their program. Should they fail in any regard, they are referred to the Juvenile Justice system…

MaryAnne shared information regarding the alarming increase in drug-related arrests. Over 70% of the juvenile arrests in Escondido involve marijuana use and possession.

The following slides depict the percentage of offenses on a year-to-year comparison…

An important part of the program, and included in most all sentencing, is support from a Compliance Monitor… A community member that agrees to support the youth as they serve their sentence. It’s a 90 day period of responsibility and important for the young offender to know they have someone supporting them through the completion of their sentence.

Past President Barry Baker volunteers as a Compliance Monitor and spoke about his efforts in this program… Thanks Barry for becoming involved and supporting this important community program…
