Elmer explained the project underway to complete an Anaerobic Digester at their facility on Washington Avenue. The facility will accommodate all greens and food waste for composting; and convert the resultant methane gas into Regenerated Natural Gas to be used in fueling their fleet of collection vehicles.

This level of waste reduction will enable all of the cities served by EDCO to meet State of California mandates. EDCO serves the cities of Escondido, Poway, San Marcos, Vista and unincorporated areas at its Escondido Transfer and Recycling facility. The Anaerobic Digester project is planned to go online in 2021, and will accommodate all green waste (currently collected separately from trash and other recyclables) and will also include all food waste… There will be a strong community education program intended to help the communities’ residents adjust to the combined green waste and recyclables for composting collection changes…

Elmer shared some other information about EDCO’s operation in Escondido, including the fact that over 2,300 tons of waste are processed at the facility each day. This is a significant business operation in Escondido that serves much of inland North County… The City of Escondido receives nearly $2 million annually in fees generated by the processing and transporting this waste…
