Announcements:

Past President Mike Dunlap reported that a major donor to the Rotary Foundation, Doris Stinson passed away recently…

Mike shared the following about Doris and her philanthropy supporting our Club’s charitable endeavors…

“One of our angels died this evening. We made Doris a member of our club a couple of years ago so her contributions to TRF would count for our club’s annual giving.

Doris gave many tens of thousands of dollars to support projects our club supported. For example, she gave $10,000 twice to support the Escondido Police Department sponsoring their football game with the Marines.  She also gave money for EPD’s Explorer program, the veterans’ support program for Dave Casey, the educational support program our former member established, our Global Grants in San Felipe and two in São Paulo, the memorial wall on Camp Pendleton honoring the members of the 1st MEF killed in action, hundreds of thousands for Cabin By The Lake, the Palomar Health Foundation, funds directly to TRF to combat polio as well as establishing a charitable gift annuity with TRF and more than I can recall at the moment.

Several years ago I took a President of Rotary International to her small $700 a month senior apartment where she gave him $10,000 for polio eradication. Her gifts to support our work are much larger than the amounts shown on our club’s list of contributions.

Major Donor and Honorary Sunrise Rotary member, Doris Stinson …

In addition to supporting Rotary and projects important to our members, she has given well over a million dollars to the Salvation Army.

Another memory is when she was honored on Camp Pendleton at the dedication of the memorial wall and the commanding general hugged her .. and she held on tight, not letting go .. she always had a thing for young men in uniform. Doris would of turned 97 in a few days.

She is a TRF Major Donor as a member of our club.  Although she never attended a club meeting, for over 20 years she never said no when we asked for financial support.”

We lost a friend.

High Fives:

Past President George Beitner and Erin traveled to Virginia for Christmas and visited the Naval Academy in Annapolis… A small shot glass was a gift for President Brian commemorating the trip…..
