 Program:

Chris Miller introduced Dennis Astil, the Manager of Construction and Facilities Planning for Palomar College. Dennis talked about the variety of projects being built on the various Palomar campuses and the methodologies used on the projects,

The projects are all supported through the proceeds of the $694 M bond measure passed by the voters in 2006. The key element of all the projects is smart management and attention to budget detail.

Dennis highlighted the latest project, a facilities and maintenance center that will provide a single location for warehousing, facilities operations and maintenance services on the main campus. Utilizing an odd-shaped, highly visible piece of property at the entrance to the college, they used a design-build with competition process. Attempting to achieve the ‘best value’ in the project, while maintaining some design control. Concerns were a limited budget of $15.5 M, while building an aesthetically pleasing facility which would also be durable and energy efficient. They are proud to have achieved all of the criteria set by the Board and within budget constraints… Dennis will be making a similar presentation to an upcoming gathering of architects and construction managers…
